But it was a good session. If this is our weaker race then we look like we can do well this year. Obviously it would be nice to have a little distance to some of those that are also close, but that is for the team now to develop the car and get some breathing space.

That James Allison prediction of Mercs speed didn't age well.
why don't we calm down and post McLaren relevant posts, hm?
Rus did not look that bad in p3

ontopic,
Car seems good, top3 was doable. One lap pace is right there or close to it.
Let's see what's possible tomorrow and how is the long run pace compared to the competition.

Tough S1 for Lando, Perez did not block him though
Nor radio: "yeah, shocking as normal, sorry"
It wasn't exactly an excitable comment, which was around whether Mclaren were in the top 4

Its up to the team to repeat last year and find a second over the rest to give our drivers some breathing space and to cover possible mistakes. We can pretty much talk about how many mistakes Norris and Piastri do on the critical Q3 but how about we give it our all to create such a fast car that these mistakes won't matter.

Tomorrow's race might be a whole different matter compared to one lap pace.

I tend to think today Lando would have been on pole by a margin had they all had the same car.

This kind of analysis is encouraging, things should work out even better next weekends. The density of the results is impressive.

And yet, nobody got out of 1:29.0. Eh, I thought it was possible. The difference between RB19 and RB20 in 1 year isn't that big. Six tenths of a point.

Edit: I'm not retracting my words yet that the team will be the second fastest. But even so, I'm not sure the team is capable of repeating the 2011-2012 seasons. Back then there were 6 wins in one season. Let's see if there will be so many suitable tracks for the car.

Not great, not bad. But OK. Don't think we have the one lap pace of Max and Charles. But we aren't far off. Think will change from race to race (behind Max)

Btw I think this proves that race pace in FP2 was real and not due to engine modes or fuel.

McLaren looked to be second best after Verstappen. We are starting P7 and P8 so that will not be ideal, but if the team does well tomorrow they may be able to get to a podium. That would be a great result.

Agree. Pretty disappointed now given what might have been but excited to see them try to come through the field tomorrow for a podium

Ted was just saying that Zak has now said that the new upgrades won't come until May as they don't want to introduce them until after the sprint races.

I wonder if they have decided to budget more on bringing time than points and to keep working away on the development. Hopefully it is this and not struggles with the projects, though I don't think it is.

Yeah it is positive in that the car has pace and is very close to the front. We didn't get the final lap we wanted from Lando and Oscar had a poor Qualifying, but we've a race to get through yet before the points are dished out, and it feels quite positive in that we could fight for wins even with this configuration.

It was a good overall quali, much better start than last year. As Stella and Brown said, if they can keep the development pace as last year and find those same gains during the season, they are on for some wins.
