I rely on McLaren to build the beautiful Version of it. ^^
Indeed! Smrikoffs model is actually very elegant. The only thing I don't really like is the long tip on the nose. If they'd shorten that down a bit, it's really a beautifull nose imo.

So what is it in the regulations that's preventing them for just having nose cones like the Renault R25 or the McLaren MP4-21 ?

Nothing prevents them from doing that. The regs give a minimum size for the nose in order to provide an adequate crash structure. The teams want to maximise air flow below the nose in order to gain downforce. So they will possibly design a nose that meets the minimum size to meet the regs whilst maximising airflow. Hence the ugly designs being suggested in the thread.

Those noses were terrible, well all the car was terrible. Hope they can create something better than this.

Is it possible to pass the crash test without nose cone being too heavy?

A narrow nose is trouble in terms of crash structure, the MP4-18 failed a the front impact test a few times. The scrabs proposal will definitely have issues with passing the crash test.

I simply don't understand one thing ... can't teams and FIA change this utter BS before next season starts? C'mon!!!

its too late, it has a big influence on the rest of the car so teams will never agree to change it now. apparently this was brought up at the time the rules were drawn out (i remember reading.) some engineers said this will create ugly noses but it was ignored (like the double diffuser was)

Latest James Allen on F1 podcast had Jenson Button touch on this.

As a visual designer myself, I was somewhat shocked to hear a racing driver say aesthetics don't matter, until he followed up with how aerodynamics will usually necessitate pleasing forms. Just not in this case. :(

The shape isn't driven by aero but a clumsy rule to lower the nose. The rules define a box with steps so the aero people seeking min frontal area design to the limit of those steps.

As for aesthetics, here's a quote from Ruskin:

I would say a Peregrine Falcon or a Tiger Shark are both beautiful and far from useless...
