Williams FW37 Mercedes

For the people wondering why they removed the low beam wing: essentially, Williams had to sacrifice diffuser volume in order to have it legal. Last year that disadvantage probably got outweighted by the benefits of the upwash, but this year they probably managed to have enough upwash by other means, meaning it no longer is a positive trade off.

Question Turbo ،?
Do you think that this update gives improved rear section of the car

11:18 KARUN CHANDHOK has returned from the rain/drizzle/droplets to give us his thoughts on some of the cars he watched through Turns 7, 8 and 9.

“Turns 7 and 8 are good places to watch as the cars come though the dip. It’s nice to see a medium-speed corner and how the cars work through there.

“Grosjean kept locking the fronts, it looked like he was struggling to get brake balance right.

“When Sainz comes along, I don’t know if it’s conscious or not, but the way he turns the wheel reminds me of Fernando. He’s so aggressive. The car doesn’t look great, though, the rear end doesn’t look so stable, and traction and drive don’t look great either.

“I wandered up to Turn 9 as well, fast right-hander. The Mercedes looks like the perfect car. In Turns 7 and 9, it looks like it’s on rails. Lewis has so much confidence, he can do what he wants with it.

“Massa looked like he wasn’t trying, I think the car looks really easy to drive. The car didn’t move, it looked stable. I think Williams have a good base, to do have done that time [Massa’s 1m25.763s] on that run. It looked smooth to me, like watching Alain Prost!”

I was guessing they needed more rear df and probably were able to sacrifice the drag trade-off. The car was slippery last year but lacked rear df/traction relative to the others. I won't be surprised if we see the top speeds come down a hair on the Williams now that it has the new areo bits. Usually wings that close to the diffuser are there to help with diffuser efficiency along with providing downforce.

Highly likely that the new configuration provided more downforce then the previous one.

That does not mean last year's choice for that beam wing was a bad one. You have to understand that the loss of the "normal" beam wing (this one was allowed to place outside the maximum regulated zone of the diffuser) we got know before 2014, was a very important device. It didn't create a lot of downforce on it's own, but helped to increase upwash of both the diffuser and the low pressure side of the rear wing, which increased air extraction, hence downforce from the diffuser, and allowed for a better attachment to the underside of the rear wing, making it aerodynamically more stable.

With that option gone in 2014, teams had to look for solutions to still (partly) replicate the effects of the beam wing. Williams chosed to sacrifice a bit of the diffuser in order to put a low down beam wing on the diffuser roof, something that did work for them at the time. A year later with more time and development at hand, Williams will probably be now in a better position to replicate the same effect without a beam wing.

15:04 We’ve just been visited by KARUN CHANDHOK, back from some more time in the field, with an update on Ferrari’s progress and Massa’s pace.

“Kimi looks quite good. Watching slow speed turn-in at the last chicane, Kimi looks really good, and at high-speed it looks reasonable but not as good as the Williams. But it looks like he’s focusing more on race runs.

“The Williams looked really balanced on the softs, when Massa went for that laptime. It looks like on the medium they were doing race set-up work, they built in some understeer to protect the rear tyres; pushing the fronts and protecting the rears. When they went for the soft, the car looked really good for that one lap.”

Interesting how one of the rear suspension arms passes through the rear wing end plate.
