Yeah, tires were new at the start. Guess the pace just wasn’t there at all and Alonso had to fully concentrate on defending.
Croft said on Sky that Alonso and Verstappen were on 3 lap old mediums. I dont remember them using a medium set in practice. He also got some wrong information about what tyres each driver was on so I dont know if the Alonso info was correct. As for race pace, I had a chuckle reading the articles about correlation issues and updates not being dialed in.
