Were the medium tires new or used? The car's performance was bad from lap 9 onward. Sector 2 was particularly atrocious.

Let's see if they can make some setup changes to improve pace before Qualy.
Yeah, tires were new at the start. Guess the pace just wasn’t there at all and Alonso had to fully concentrate on defending.
Croft said on Sky that Alonso and Verstappen were on 3 lap old mediums. I dont remember them using a medium set in practice. He also got some wrong information about what tyres each driver was on so I dont know if the Alonso info was correct. As for race pace, I had a chuckle reading the articles about correlation issues and updates not being dialed in. Sounded a lot like last year.
Ok well, just checked the race start and unfortunately no on board where you can see the tires, but from afar it really looked liked used ones. Strange, as according to f1.tv they didn’t use the mediums yesterday.

Sprint qualifying requires a medium set for Q1 and a medium set for Q2 so everyone had medium tires with 3 laps (out + push + in).
Yeah but not everyone started on the mediums used in sq! You could clearly see the shiny new ones around Fernando.

My bad, didn’t think about that, cheers!

Nonetheless, the others started on brand new ones.

I saw used Mediums on Alonso from Sainz onboard at the start.

Reason: no need for the F bombs

Alonso:
We were maybe asking more from the tyres than we needed to maintain that pace, it's not our pace.
More upgrade packages needed.

ALO been called up by the stewards for his run-in with Sainz at Turn 7

Let's hope the FIA does not ruin the weekend

Wow 5th is really bad? It's pretty much their average for the season.

this is the second half of the quote, he was positive during the interview, citing he was surprised by the pace improvement

He did say he thought they would fall back quicker after having taken second place at the start, but I would attribute that to himself rather than the car.

When Sainz locked up like 4 times on dirty air I thought maybe that would make him a bit less racy, but Alo still had way worse deg. This shows how far we are from those teams still. Like Alonso said he just pushed beyond what was capable for this car.
