Is there anything stopping them from missing the test and holding a private session a week later

I seem to remember that happening last year but I've forgotten who it was

I don't remember it last year, bit what happened with Lotus the year that they had to give up testing due to a cracked chassis or suspension mounting?

I think in the past teams have been allowed to skip a day in a test and use that day somewhere else, but I think it would take agreement from all teams.

Seems like Lotus are indeed skipping the first testing session.

I can only imagine that had it been Marussia, Caterham or (before 2013) HRT we would all be laughing at them.

Can't go testing if you don't have an engine.

This was all in Dany Bahar's plan.

You can't build a 2014 chassis for a crash test if you don't have an engine.

With mounting points standardized and mandated side crash structures that shouldn't be that big a problem...

Mercedes skipped one day of the Jerez test in 2012, running the W02 for 3 of the 4 days, that allowed them to have a one day private test with the W03.

Obviously Lotus are not going to do that, but if a team wanted to show up to Jerez with the previous year's car just for the sake of not missing a test (apart from the fact that the data gathered would be pretty much irrelevant), it would be considered illegal to run another car than the others?

Looking at the bright side of skipping testing (if there is one this year), I feel there are a lot of funny-as-hell tweets on the way from Lotus when they will se others' cars.

As long as it meets the 2014 F1 safety regulations you can test a milk float in preseason testing.

From what I understood, you can test anything you want? I just think back to 2009 when McLaren were running a 2008 wing on their 2009 car.

As previously stated, the data would be mostly irrelevant. This really doesn't sound good for Lotus, looks like Kimi definitely made the right move.
