Any clue about the reason now they´re more competitive in qualifying than race?

They lack durability and substantability of general pace in a longer stints. Probably due to the pre-season testing shortage of optimising the performance to a longer distance. Monaco could be the first track where they wont suffer so much, because of the smaller engine punishment the track does, but in the other way the brakes work hard (and electric part of restoring and using the energy) and that could lead to other problems.

Tomorow they have the best chance of scoring points so far, fingers crossed [-o<

What happened to Verstappen? He drove a 1:16:750 in q1, a 1:16:546 in q2 but drove a horrible 1:16:957 in q3.

Total silence will be deserved, when Sainz will outscore the lill Senna in general standings. Right now they are equal
Sorry but that´s wrong

WDC standings:
10th Carlos Sainz 8 points
11th Max Verstappen 6 points

qualifying battle: 4-2 for Carlos

He couldn't put the lap together at the only moment that matters. It happens but the problem is he immediately blamed the tyres, I guess Sainz had a different car and different tyres. Maybe when Sainz wasn't second in FP1 tyres didn't work for him?

Makes you wonder that if one day Verstappen is fifth we'll hear praises of tyres working and not an "extraordinary" driver.

5. One lap more than Lewis, shouldn't make too much of a difference. Ricciardo did one more even, everyone else 4 or 5

Perhaps one day when Verstappen is fifth we would be complaining about him having an off day. 8)

I think there are no excuses when driving the same car. Sainz was faster, period. But Sainz is a very talented driver. IMO Saintz and Verstappen could well be battling for victories in a few years time.

And this is already Sainz third appearance in Monaco, while Verstappen has never driven this track. That should count for something.

All In all I think Verstappen can be proud of being able to keep up with Sainz.

By the way Senna's first qualifying result in Monaco was a 13th spot. So all is not lost yet :D

Regarding Verstappen's performance, the only thing that annoys me even more than all the hype is all the mud throwing.
The guy is 17 years old. This is his first F1 season. He qualifies in Monaco ahead of the likes of Button, Hulkenberg, Massa, Bottas.
Most 17 year olds on the planet would have binned it in the first lap. On a video game.
Hell, lots of WDC F1 drivers with lots of years of experience have binned it in Monaco.
Give him a f*&$ing break.
Both him and Sainz seem to be doing a very good job so far. Let's wait and see what the future holds for them.
In a few years' time we might have a new Senna, or we might have two.

Yes, in warmer conditions or with tyres that were actually, ya know, super soft, I think they (or should I say vettel) would have been a fair bit closer.

But Mercedes still is a faster car so I doubt if they'd have got either car regardless without mistakes.

Comparing this year's times to last year we see some strange things going on. Mercedes improved their pace around here by nearly a second compared to last year, which is in line with the last race. Red Bull is strange, they only improved by .3 sec since last year, but that improvement was enough to maintain their second row start. Ferrari improved nearly .7 seconds since last year, although Raikkonen actually improved his qualifying time by a whole second. Mercedes is in general about .6 - 1 second per lap faster than Ferrari on average per lap in race pace. They need to find another half second of race pace relative to Mercedes to challenge them regularly for victory, as it stands now, Ferrari is in a similar position to Red Bull last year, they're there to pick up the scraps.

If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.

Nico also flat spotted them even in Q2 just like in Q3 and created yellow flag, which prevented Button from entering Q3!

The tires he flat spotted are not the ones he will start the race, he did his best lap with the first set.

Can you please provide some evidence of that? Because, I haven't seen Merc using Two sets in Q2 ever since 2014. It would be interesting if they did. Otherwise also, I don't think tyres would be a problem in Monaco as the leader is going to run a controlled race, which means most of the leading group would be under utilizing the tyres.

Dont the Q3 guys get an extra set?
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II
