How much have Mercedes gained in power over the winter ? Did I not see James Allison very smug when talking about the PU at the launch ?
https://f1lead.com/2021/01/05/mercedes- ... hole-race/
That seems true actually. In fact, the 2021 power unit is expected to have 25hp more compared to the one used last year. That would mean that Mercedes’ power unit could reach 1050hp in total.

Finally, during the season, Toto Wolff said that Mercedes’ goal for 2021 was to use “Party Mode” throughout the whole race after the new regulations were applied from Monza.
So it will party time all race every race! :D
A 1 year party

Count me in! Party time, excellent

Hoping for a season where 4 teams have winning cars, afraid Mercedes will just bend everybody over again.

I'm going to hazard a guess that they weren't much behind last year, and will remain a tad behind this year.

It's also not just the peak figure but also what profile a PU can be run at. If they can run the engine at high output (aka Party Mode) for a longer period of time than an opponent then that would be more useful than the headline figure.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

But they dont have party modes anymore with the ban ? So you run what you can in qualy/race? If a team is 10hp down in qualy, it will be the same in the race, no ?

I think everyone would like to know. Honda never releases precise numbers. 25 HP at Honda, however, is the average upgrade for a new spec throughout the season. In winter they make much bigger jumps, especially with this new engine.
By the way, HP is not the most important thing in an engine. There are also other things that make an engine faster.

Where exactly did the changes take place with the renewed power source?
" It seems as if enormous steps have been taken in the configuration of the combustion chamber that will benefit thermodynamic efficiency."

Electric problem solved.
"In addition, the electrical component of the engine has been extremely revised".

All the differences come from the ERS now. They can run them in lower modes but the actual ICE has to remain in a constant power mode.

None of the manufactures release numbers, so 25 per in season upgrade, and even more over the winter, is wishful thinking at best. Not to mention every manufacture is well into the realm of diminishing returns.

Edit:
I'd go as far as saying the improvement rumors most likely aren't about peak horsepower, but about what power level they feel they can maintain.

At the start of the season: Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, Renault............

Red Bull has been a slow starter for the last three seasons and the same might happen this season due to unreliability early on. AM will have an early edge over McLaren due to their experience with the Merc engine but this edge will diminish quickly. Ferrari is a big unknown at this point but they do develop their cars quickly with the mighty resources they have. The Renaults are the dark horses to look out for this season with Alonso and Ocon, but recent management changes might affect their performance early in the season.

Sorry, my point was if they have developed the engine so that the equivalent of Party Mode can be run for the whole race. That would be a serious step forward compared to a "we can hit this BHP figure on the dyno" but runs at a bit less for the race.

25 hp for Mercedes wow

If Ferrari has only 20, and Honda 15 it will be 2020 copycat season

I’ve read rumors about Alpine already using split turbo, is that credible ?
