About Alonso's engine allocations. Out of the eight, how many are of the new spec, i.e. the one with improved 'reliability'? Can anyone hazard a guess?

Alonso's car just lost drive at the end of FP1, parking his car along the straight at the exit of the Senna S. Hopefully for him it is gearbox related and not engine related...

I think the first 3 were old spec, and the last 5 were new spec.

Think it was engine related, but no huge drama since he's been using engines that have done 3 races during free practice.

Just to add to this, it was an old spec engine (the #2 engine) that just expired in free pracrice.

The engine went 2 laps prematurely. That's how accurate these life cycle calculations are.
They should be confident in their race engine doing the distance ie if Alonso is not pressured.

Vettel is flying, must be on an old engine as well. He better settle down if he knows what's good for him. Ba da bing ba da BOOM :P
For Sure!!

Koboyashi crashed in the same exact place too. So it might be bad luck.
But actually I think we can see a trend here — Piquet came to Renault showing quite a few promises, it seemed like he progressed but suddenly came to stall, Grosjean too, now Petrov seemed like making quite a steady progress and then suddenly lost it.
Maybe it is Renault (at least to some extend) and not those guys?

Yes the engine expired
13:34 Ferrari had already planned to change Alonso's engine after the session, with the championship leader very tight on remaining motor life.

Hmmmm. That's one less engine he can practice with and any he uses in qualifying and the race in the next two grandprixs will be getting very fine.

It's a bit of a worry that once the engine got anywhere near to its expected end-of-life it simply went.

He has 4 other engines to practice with. His #8 engine (which has 2 races left in it) will do the final 2 races.

How is that a worry? They were expecting it to expire around that time and it did just that. Ferrari's engine management in the 2nd half of the season is going perfectly to plan.
