McLaren MP4-28 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I really don't know wtf the broadcasters are doing. When watching F1 on television it sounds nothing like that. And then there is some spy guy with his home camera capturing this sound :) Sounds so much better than on the telly :)

Partly, I think it's because we're hearing a 2011 McLaren. So it's blown diffusers a-go-go.

Yes I know. And I also wondered a bit why they run hot blowing when 2014 cars wont have that.

But this video sounds better than F1 on tv I 2011.

Well, they were concerned that the loads next year will be greater than this year, so perhaps they wanted a big bad blown diffuser to put the tyres under maximum stress.

Maybe a dumb question but how do you know it is a 2011 car?

Broadcast TV is canned on purpose. Download a race with natural sound and you get the same as you see in the video above.

I'm certainly no expert in the technical side but being a Button fan I do know that he prefers a car with a touch of oversteer as his own driving style tends to induce understeer in the car.

Because they're not allowed to test with this year's or last year's car.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Strange, every interview I've seen of his he's quite vocal in saying that he doesn't like oversteer at all and can't be quick in a car that tends to oversteer. "I can't live with a car that oversteers" is a quote that comes to mind.

As 'Just_a_fan' wrote, it was my understanding that he liked a very neutral car similar to Sebastian Vettel. However the difference being that Sebastian liked the car to feel like it was on rails, a by-product of which, the car will be somewhat twitchy. Jenson Button seems to like a car that may be neutral but more tells you with understeer as it approaching its limits of grip. Essentially a car he can play around with a little bit more.

Button wants a planted front. His "carry speed through corner" style induces push understeer otherwise. I'm not sure you can say Vettel likes neutral - I'd say he tends to prefer oversteer rather than neutral.

Button had been very vocal about his input into this years car, so maybe the mechanical balance of the car was tuned for him.
The aero-balance I think has nothing to do with the driver's input over the winter, there are just to many variables that can affect the aero-balance at the factory and the real aero-balance on the track.
