As I said, I noticed the pattern with other drivers as well. Though not over as many laps. They do this for a couple of laps, pit and then do a stint. Not so with MCL. This pattern and then one short stint for Stoffel and no stint for Fernando.

Do they have to run slower every second lap?

I think it's a similar pattern like in Winter Testing. I think Mclaren and Honda came to Melbourne and used Friday as an extension of Winter Testing. Just to make up for the time lost in Winter testing. Maybe they'll focus on the weekend tomorrow. The fact they are on the back foot already this season.

I was surprised by how fast they were today considering so many problems throughout testing! 12th is ok after all this drama...I expected them to be last and not running at all! The car looks a bit unstable but I think that has to do with setup work since they didn't get any running in testing they must be behind on the setup front...so I expect them by mid-season and with a new spec engine they'll get to the top 5!!

This is hybrid era pattern. in general My thoughts are that they measure battery "ability - charge" to repeat that lap they need to recharge.. It also same pattern for longruns - they do several laps and then one slow - IMHO to recharge battery. In that way they find maximum pace they can run without depleting battery. or at least - they know pace at which battery starts to go minus. (they can still push for a few laps at the pace but would require recharge after number of laps.

Maybe honda have problem with ERS ???... their ERS cannot charge for full 1lap??? Question mark again... classic problem...

No, check the laptimes. SV did a stint not showing this pattern.

I dont know what they are doing or why but it must be because of a problem with the Honda engine.

I'd like to know if he was watching Alonso or Vandoorne because even setup can make a big difference

What we do know is that the chassis is not the best, and is under developed because of the lack of testing time, and we still know that the engine is the biggest problem

All McLaren and Honda related threads should be locked until they are back on track... The amount of predictions, false statements, made up things, untrue things is astonishing.
So, two months for the engine, in those two months they will for sure find more speed in the chassis, if everything goes ok and both sides deliver, they could be in for a decent second hald of the year, and that's a BIG if currently...
