Aston are extremely lucky that they got alonso. can you imagine what they would think about this car if they had 2 Lances driving for them?
Even without Alonso, there are not 2 Lances on the grid. Someone like Gasly would've been available and he isn't too far off ocon who himself was reasonably close to Alonso. Reality is that Lance is a slow F1 driver - probably slowest on the grid - and Checo/Vettel's poor form masked that

The best-case scenario for AM is to end the season as 2nd fastest car on the grid behind Redbull & still finish P4 in the construction championship.
Lance is making sure to make it a reality

Alonso starts P2 tomorrow. With a lightning start and assuming Friday was somewhat representative it could be interesting

Remember, last year, Lance looked pretty close to Vettel. Vettel was no longer the driver that drove for RBR. Unfortunately for Lance, Alonso found and learned how to use the Warp drive button on the steering wheel. Lance still hasn't figured it out.

Still think only Lance can take him out of that seat.

He was also going to put it P2 were it not for the red flag, his lap was only 4 tenths slower than Max after the 2nd sector (which was purple) but the red flag screwed him, thankfully the result is still the same anyways.

Hopefully tomorrow the engine doesn't explode or he doesn't run out of fuel or a lightning strike doesn't land on him.

did you get the last sector time of that lap? how far was the gap to max? race pace looks good, alonso looking to put pressure on max today if it's a dry race

Race finishing position when Fernando Alonso starts 2nd in Montreal:
- 2007: P7.
- 2011: DNF.
- 2022: P9.

He's never scored more than 2 points starting P2 (2007 old system). If the curse is broken it bodes well for the future

Alonso's engineer said the lap was 6 tenth faster than his previous.

Ooof so still 8 tenths shy of max. Max really did go all out on that lap then. I see alonso likes to build up to a lap so maybe had the red flag not occurred he could have gone faster on the next lap as would max but the gap could be closer

The gap in the 1st sector was an anomaly on that lap IMO. Normally, it was quite close. The last sector was consistently slower by 3 tenths. And that was the closer to the average gap I think but there so much variation in run plans, conditions, etc that its hard to say definitively.

I've done an analysis of this in the past by watching the GP starts in Canada for at least 12 years back. Polesitter virtually always leads T1 in Canada. The grid bias is very strong. You basically have to stall to lose the lead.

That's my hope from this weekend -

If Alonso maintain 2nd for most of the race ; we will have straight comparison between effectiveness of new package against RB.

Thats interesting. Anyways its not like he can maintain the position afterwards even if that happened. 3 drs zones + long straight + redbull top speed means its virtually impossible beating Max unless something weird happens. But yes, if Fernando stays 2nd for most of the race and Max finishes not as far away as the other races then it means the upgrades have worked nicely.
