McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It's all well and good saying what you think of the nose due to its aesthetics but McLaren have the data and hundreds of smart people with terabytes of computing power and streams of wind tunnel figures! They will know what's working well and what isn't.

It'll be to do with the cohesion of all the parts as a unit rather than an individual flaw. Perhaps there was too much emphasis on designing the mushroom suspension fairings and the whole car was built around them, but only they know the answer to that.

In all honestly, I think people are placing too much hope/belief/expectation on the rear suspension. It's a nice detail, but not what I'd call a critical component to the overall performance of the car. Only when they fully understand the current package and improve it to it's full potential will the suspension begin to give them an edge over other teams. Just my thought. :P

I still have hope for this car yet, there are signs of improvement in the past 2 races.

Unfortunately, Mclaren don't seem to have brought a high downforce package bar sticking some extra wing angle on, which tbh is a shot in the foot.
Nobody brought a "high downforce package". That's because they've lost enough df that they've run close to max df at every race.

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Arguable. The days that teams would really bolt on whatever wing they can find are over.

Eric Boullier said that in Monaco on mp4-29 were "a lot of mechanical upgrades". What can be these mechanical upgrades if he said "a lot"?

Suspension geometry, brake drums, the actual carbon layup of the wishbones are all possibilities. I think their aim was to get the front tyres into a better window to maximise their downforce. If you can't get the tyres up to temperature it doesn't matter what downforce levels you have. You could argue that the more downforce generated the higher the tyre temperature but Mercedes last year proved that this is not necessarily the case when Red Bull arguably had the most downforce but could still control their tyre temperatures (albeit after the Silverstone disaster).

Well Jense and Lewis got this one wrong. I wonder why when we could all see that the lack of DF would hurt Mclaren at Monaco, these two thought Macca would be fast. It doesn't speak highly for the drivers' ability to understand the technical side of racing.
Pretty positive they have more idea of what there talking about than some arm chair fan.

It's (at least to me) the old nose. Introduced in Bahrain
