Sauber utilizes the same gearbox internals/casing as Ferrari but not the same rear suspension design.
The implication seems to be that this is a universal issue across the Ferrari gearbox but that theory doesn’t seem to be getting much traction at this point.
Essentially the gearbox "real" is fully contained as unit with differential etc, this whole assembly living INSIDE the car's rear structure that holds the suspension etc.
They were of a whole unit construction but moved away from that with regulation control of gearbox lifing. A crash would/could crack that case and need to replace with a penalty due.
This way, suspension loading during crash CAN damage the outer case, leaving the gearbox "real" intact, so no penalty for replacement of the exoskeleton structural component.
