Why won't electric cars be exciting to watch? The difference from a spectating point of view is simply noise, isn't it? If noise is that crucial to motorsport, why don't you listen to races on the radio rather than watching on TV? It's because motorsport is exciting to watch. Formula E will quite likely be exciting to watch. Downforce levels are low and treaded tyres means grip will be low too. What other formula runs treaded tyres and minimal downforce? Formula Ford. It's often the most exciting form of single seater racing to watch at a race meeting, even though the sound of 20 crossflow engines is somewhat monotonous. On that basis, I think Formula E might be quite exciting, especially through the streets of major cities. I'm looking forward to attending an event.

I would say the noise adds quite a lot to the spectacle, especially when you're track-side.

Does it have to be deafening though? Wouldn't it be refreshing to be able to hear the PA so you know what's happening in the race? It's not like Formula E will be silent - you'll hear the noise of the motors, the gearboxes, the brakes, the tyres on the road and the air passing over the bodywork. I think it'll be quite refreshing.

I'm with you Andy: Electric racing (being much quieter) is opening up venues that would otherwise be unavailable to "internal combustion" racing, and that has got to be a good thing. In fact, many circuits now have strict noise limits, limits on the number of days of racing per year, etc, all because of noise pollution. Quieter electric cars get around this problem in one stroke.

I'd rather watch/drive an electric race car than look at an empty track....

If you want to do the latter, head to Mallory Park. It's now been closed because of noise. I was supposed to be racing there next week...

WOW: Alain Prost & Jean-Paul Driot team up for Formula E

Seems that they really want with racing "stars" extract much as possible from this series. If you are electronic engineer it must be GREAT. Nice oportunities for ideas outside of box (deviation of current petrol racing). MORE

Nice to see some big names entering Formula E. Glad to see that most of the entrants are from very reputable sources. FE looks to have a good strong team line up for it's inaugural season

To bad it will be ruined by twitter and getting push to passes that way...

That rule needs to go... but if it stays atleast it'll just be one push to pass I'm assuming. But yes, at first I was going to ignore FE because of that but gradually I think I'll begrudgingly accept it just to see how electric technology can develop. Remember battery development will be good for most electronics not just electric cars.

Personally I am looking forward to Formula E because it is another technical challenge and something completely different. At first I was not so keen on the idea but after a lot of reflection this formula will only help the technology of the future. It would be great to see manufacturers produce their own cars some day rather than just one chassis supplier, though.

I did a quick technical summary of Formula E on my blog a few months ago - http://thewptformula.wordpress.com/2013 ... k-summary/

I suppose we'll just have to see ;) It might be the electric technological wonderland we all hope it'll be or it'll just end up being a gimmick an turn it into electric GP2 We'll just have to see. I'm atleast going to watch the first season to see if the cars will be able to catch my attention.

Nice to see such a huge name get involved in FE. Our current crop of teams are fairly good except maybe Dragon and Super Aguri but they are both established atleast. It would have been worrying if we see a bunch of vapor teams apply to FE like Stefan GP
