Renault R29

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Here's a statement from RF1 ..

"As I’ve already stressed, and as Nelson has also explained, the times are not important because we are not doing set-up work yet. Instead we are concentrating on getting miles on the car and checking its reliability.

Also, there have not been any cancelled tests, the team has simply changed its schedule and will instead return to Jerez for another test in March, rather than testing next week as well. These changes to our schedule were made several weeks ago."

and that's how Audi's car would look like if they entered F1:

Just putting a thought out...

Renault have mentioned their weight saving - what if they've went and done a BAR/Jaguar and made the thing too light? (i.e. its flexing too much under dynamic loads)

LOL that's so weak - it's an R8/Bentley Speed 8 with stupid grills on it LOL

The actual one is pretty slick.

Audi should buy over Honda and have a design like that, it would be f-ing sweet looking with that design. Also very unique, youd know it was a Audi on TV with that livery.

That Audi F1 fake thing looks exactly like an R26. Not quite an R29, but close.
I am not amazed by F1 cars in Monaco. I want to see them driving in the A8 highway: Variable radius corners, negative banking, and extreme narrowings that Tilke has never dreamed off. Oh, yes, and "beautiful" weather tops it all.

If my memory serves me correctly, the designer indeed used a Renault. The sidepod entrance is quite distinct.

Re: Renault R29

A trend I see happening with Renault seems to be an excuse why their car is always so underdeveloped, or at least brand new and slow.

After Nando's last WDC in 2006, the R27's lack of pace was due to all the teams resources being used up to win the title in 2006. Fair game.

From testing on the R28's lack of pace was blamed for resources being backlogged as they were late adapting to the new tires, which other teams had little problem with. Meh. That was the beginning of the year excuse. When the car was a known dog Alonso still developed it quite well, but the team announced all of their time and resources not needed to run the races was going to the design and development of the new car.

Two backlogged seasons in a row, and now the R29 is out, with all the resources from a championship team, unable to be even remotely liked by it's drivers or anywhere near as quick as anyone else in testing?

I think Renault's stance on a super lean ship might not be holding out right now.

Maybe there is a mass damper equivalent in some other area of the car. An untuned ace up a Benetton sleeve.

But I don't think so unfortunately.

It just seems that Renault have a clog.

I see your stance, Giblet. However, I just have the feeling that the R29 is not a dog. It's ugly as hell and the paint job is horrible. Furthermore, there is a sector whose highest delight is see Alonso fail. All this together forms a negative impression on the R29 which is strenghthened by them "bottoming" the time tables so far.

I feel that the R29 issues right now are reliability and suboptimal set up. But I will put my money where my mouth is, and I will buy any forum member that spends a day in Donostia - San Sebastián two months after the Australian Grand Prix a beer (Paulaner, Murphy's, Guiness, Judas, Afflingen, whatever) if the following does not hapen:
  1. Both Renaults (yes, even Nelsinho) go into Q3 in Melbourne
  2. Their pace will be very close (less than 5s at the end of the race) to the 3rd spot.
