Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Nice gray41.

I would be surprised if its main function is for additional security, considering the length of time they coped without it. It may have a primary function of conditioning the airflow towards the rear.

Nice catch. Like that of the f14t.

Is this slot in the foot plate new?

Mercedes is showing a lot of outside the box thinking in developing this car

That front wing is a work of art. Beautiful.

Mind to explain in what way this solution is more aero efficient than RBRs? All they did is extend the engine cover and cut in a huge hole to somehow fit the rear suspension that was clearly not designed for such layout. It's basically the same Torro Rosso did weeks ago in Bahrain.

The way the engine cover is almost shrink wrapped around the exhaust is crazy, but just goes to show the level of understanding and confidence the team now has to push the development of the car.

I'm guessing that getting rid of the cannon exit in that area will provide less drag (in that area) and more (effective) downforce from the rear wing?

I think I saw the "bat-wing" at the start of FP1, pictures later should prove this.

From the Autosport forum:
New front wing:
(1) The support for the winglets is a lot thinner (leading edge to trailing edge thickness) where it meets the main plane and features a more pronounced 'S' bend. (2) The winglet also has more of a wavy pattern visible at the leading edge. (3) Also there is at least one (may be more (up to three)) square hole cut out of the flat section (parallel to the ground) between the inside of the endplate and wing.

Does anyone have a comparison with the old sidepods/hot air exists from china with the new ones?

Also is the floor new, i.e. there seems to be a channel created by the floor leading all the way to the rear tyre that seems to be more distinct than before?

I noticed that too. It's more visible on the top view photos a few posts above. Seems they are channeling air to prevent it from spilling over? Is the channel there to keep the airflow attached to the sidepods?
