Red Bull RB8 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Red Bull raced two versions of floor splitter pillars , so far . One thinner in Melbourne and one thicker in Sepang (tested also at Barcelona on February). I suspect the thicker pillar may house sensors to inspect front tyres but can not tell for sure .

Could the use of normally test only fixtures during race weekends mean that they are searching a little harder the normal for answers?

RB will bring to Chine two specs of the car.

"We showed good race pace, but we know that in qualification we need to improve," said Technical Director Adrian Newey. "In order to verify the last news we will use on Friday in China two different specifications RB8. Due to feedback and preferences of both riders Mark will test improved evolution of setup of VC Malaysia and Sebastian will ride with the pre-season specification. Then we compare the results."

It was on a Slovak site. I prepared the translation of the last section, rest of it is not important.

Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer
“We have shown good race pace, but we know we need to make a step in qualifying. In order to evaluate our most recent upgrades, we will run two different specifications of the RB8 in China on Friday. Based on feedback and preference shown by both drivers, Mark will test an updated evolution of the set-up used for the Malaysian GP, while Sebastian will run a pre-season specification. We will then compare the results.”

As I heard, the old exhausts are not inside of the regs. because they needed a lot of turning vanes and who knows what else to provide that the upper wishbones didn't get damaged.

I think it wasn't the exhausts themselves, but the necessary heat shielding on the wishbones.

Yep, which means they could be in trouble with regard to these regulations.

10.3.4 Non-structural parts of suspension members are considered bodywork.

5.8.4 Once the exhaust tailpipes, the bodywork required by Article 3.8.4 and any apertures permitted by Article 3.8.5 have been fully defined there must be no bodywork lying within a right circular truncated cone which :
a) Shares a common axis with that of the last 100mm of the tailpipe.
b) Has a forward diameter equal to that of each exhaust exit.
c) Starts at the exit of the tailpipe and extends rearwards as far as the rear wheel centre line.
d) Has a half-cone angle of 3° such that the cone has its larger diameter at the rear wheel centre line.
Furthermore, there must be a view from above, the side, or any intermediate angle perpendicular to the car centre line, from which the truncated cone is not obscured by any bodywork lying more than 50mm forward of the rear wheel centre line.

No problem. Just bond the shields to the control arm and they become structural parts.

I think they're likely exploring to determine if further development of their outboard exhaust solution is worth the effort required to make it effective. That makes sense, too, if you consider the possibility that perhaps the FIA got this one right when they tightened the relevant regulations for exhaust this year.

Either way, I can think of a few teams that are likely to be watching intently as Red Bull carries out its tests this weekend.

Wow RB going back to the launch car days. Seb will run the launch car spec & Mark will run the Malaysian spec.
