Nico couldnt choose another strategy to undercut Lewis so I dont see how Mercedes was favouring him. Hamilton was driving super slow on purpose to let Vettel and the RBs overtake Nico but if Vettel would have overtaken him he could have attacked Lewis as well.
Anyway Lewis used all this options, including this one and we had a very tense race which was great. Nico (almost) secured his victory with this awesome overtake to Verstappen, that was THE moment of the race IMO. Nico was under a great pressure and he did a great move, Max was very hard but both did it well.
It was clear by how in control Hamilton was that he had tons left in is locker. He knew it and the team knew it. Otherwise why the order to speed up?
Hamilton speeding up would have benefited 1 person. Nico Rosberg, that takes no thinking at all as it smacks you in the face.
Paddy pleading and crying as well as Toto's reaction post race confirm beyond and reasonable doubt exactly who Merc wanted the title on.
The whole Merc attitude was one of 'How dare you try and win the WDC. Do as you told and hand it to Nico'.
Genuinely I'm struggling to see how anyone can't see the clear favouritism in that race. Putting the luck and bad luck arguement aside for a second Merc showed their true colours in that it's now clear who they wanted as the 2016 WDC and I imagine any fine Merc tried to apply would be laughed at by Hamilton.
Imagine trying to make a case of applying a fine because someone wanted to win in a sporting contest.
