COTA Austin - construction and infrastructure

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

What do you think of the prospect of a USGP 2012 at Austin Texas

Good thinking. Place has good infra structure and nice climate in winter.

Not good as it has no motor sport tradition in the US.

This is what has puzzled me, would anyone in his right state of mind invest 300+ MUSD of his own money on a racing track,
while thinking he could be making money when dealing with MrE, that smart or that stupid?

The American Enterprise Institute is essentially a "chamber of commerce." The positions they take are almost always skewed in favor of big business. I thought it better to point to a group for whom opposition to seemingly business-friendly initiatives is out of character. There are countless other resources available from groups expected to be against such public subsidies.

I'm sorry, but I just don't know how to address you anymore. You clearly have no earthly idea what you're talking about, and your comments thus far have amounted to little more than frantic hand waving that has no basis whatsoever in reality.

I've been polite for as long as I care to be, and I simply don't have the patience to correct you. However, I suggest that you actually read about and research the Major Events Trust Fund - not just the Cliff's Notes - before you authoritatively claim to know what it entails, because frankly, your "thoughts" on the subject make you look like a fool.

You are aware F1 isn't the only racing series that will be running there, right?

You don't have the patience to "correct" me, but you have the patience to write a paragraph making you look like a toolbox. Great posting there, skippy. Either tell me where I'm wrong or back off.

Right, holding a number of minor events in order to pay off MrE, great strategy that, how stupid of me...

Always very suspicious of people supposedly putting up vast sums of their 'own' money.

#-o Given that it's the strategy employed by every circuit that hosts major events I'd say it works pretty well when the people running the show don't suffer from cranio-rectal inversion.

I suppose we should then count among the afflicted of such a heinous disease the promoters in Barcelona, Valencia, Hockenheim, Nurburg, Spa, Magny-Cours, Suzuka, Fuji, Istanbul and a host of others who've found it very difficult to stay afloat with a business model that includes yearly visits from their friends in F1. It appears that immunity only comes in the form of large quantities of government assistance - Melbourne, Montreal, Bahrain, China, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Hungary and South Korea - or from a ravenous fan base that's eager to lap up anything offered - Silverstone and Monza.

Otherwise, it seems like you just have to hold your nose and hope for the best.

When I'm under the impression that the Cota-management has a rather limited knowledge of F1 and its popularity in the US,
could it be that they actually think they can make this event economically viable simply by pricing the tickets accordingly?

Long time reader, new to log in and first time to post. Whew!

I have watched this board like a tennis match:

it will happen vs it will not happen.

He is good vs he is bad.

The soil will never work out vs the rain will delay the construction too much.

It has made for some good reading. What is great? Everything has continued to move forward. Now we are debating about the ticket prices. We are not questioning if there will be seats (anymore). We are questioning the price of the seats. This is just lovely.

Hopefully, we can all agree: there has been progress and most of us hopes it continues onward!

Forge on!

Do GPs generally have 5000 paddock club tickets?
