You only do what´s necessary, no need for any more.
1) If you're making a texture for a tyre, it's probably quicker to ask pirelli for their stock one, which will no doubt include all the variations in colour.
2) If you're a driver, and you happen to have suddenly got a bit forgetful (
) about what tyre you're on it's probably informative.
3) For intermediates and wets at least, you probably want the surface of the tyre to change appearance.
4) Really – this is trivial, for the sake of 3 minutes in photoshop with the hue/saturation slider, it's not worth not doing.
