A quick sketch of how laptimes evolved during qualifying:

Image

The above shows one panel per qualifying session, x-axis is time from the first lap completed in Q1, y-axis is laptime (with 107% limit based on session best laptime).

Colour code: green - driver's best so far into the session; purple - best time into session so far.

At this point in the season, One of the few things I'm willing to bank on is that W06 might be the most difficult car in the field to set-up.

I made that point in pre-season testing based on what the drivers were saying. The Mercedes W06 has a very specific sweet spot. Looks like I was right.

Although Hamilton has been happy with the car in all weekends apart from Malaysia. It certainly looked very nice to drive out there today.

He didn't say they were running a light fuel load. Ferrari don't know what Mercedes are doing. He said Mercedes were running heavier. There's a difference. Light suggests near-qualifying trim. There only needs to be 2 or 3 laps worth of fuel more on the Merc for perception to be skewed, even though I don't believe that's the case.[/quote]

SMH let me rephrase it for you then ... why would ferrari run less fuel than they are starting the race on and why would mercedes run more fuel than they are starting the race on if that portion of FP2 is to simulate the first stint? what it looks like is just fans coming up with creative excuses everytime a car looks like its close to mercedes.... nothing lasts forever in F1

china was a procession up front because nobody wanted to attack and damage their tires allowing the car behind to attack them with the exception of hamilton who was free to do as he wished in clean air...with the different characteristics of this track i do not think that will be the case tomorrow
cars in second third and fourth should be able to attack without having massive understeer and chewing up their tires.
based on outright pace along with long run pace i dont think this will be a cake walk for hamilton even though i pick him to win. thats my opinion and thats the end of that.

Did you miss the end of last years race? Nico on the faster tires, & using engine modes he wasn't supposed to, wasn't able to get past Hamilton.

But luckily, neither Ferrari driver is Rosberg.

Why salty? Look at all the hamilton worshipping.
Only that that user's posts seem to major on fanboyism. Or perhaps I'm just getting grumpy in my old age...

I'm confident that it's a very different story from China. Mercedes themselves were referring only to Malaysia in the buildup - likely because of the rear limited nature - and free practice/qualifying have been much closer than China.

Now, with the cars seemingly having difficulty following, much may depend on the start/stops.

But my money's on a 1-3 for Ferrari, Hamilton 2nd.

Ferrari very closer to Mercedes than ever before in dry. Long run pace also looking favorable. Might spring a surprise tomorrow. Start is the key for Vettel and Rosberg.

Going to be another epic Bahrain like last year?

- what happened to Rosberg? I bet it was safety car and tyres in 2014. Gap a bit too big and weird saving tyres in Q2 strategy. Why would they do that, how much can you gain from it? Split Merc-Ferrari is not bad for the race.
- weird session anyway, wasn't Bottas close at one point? Still fast.
- third choice rookie Sainz again faster than new Senna? No headlines this time and 20 s pitstop.

New Senna lost power but nevertheless great effort from Sainz

The new Senna stated to the Dutch press that he made a set-up mistake on the car after FP3 (where he had oversteer). In qualifying he experienced massive understeer, especially on brand new tires. it wasn't really engine related, he took responsibility for messing up.

This is the first time that we can see his lack of track knowledge and single seater experience with setting up a car.
