They may not have been running light but they certainly weren't running full either and Max's time which was only 5 tenths off was done on the harder C3
The C3 Max used is softer than the C2 Hamilton used, not harder.
I think you had better check your facts again. Max ran on the white tyres and mercedes did runs on the yellow. I'm not sure if the softer tyre is c2 or c4 but whatever the softer tyre was that was what Mercedes used.

in any case it doesn't really matter as much as the amount of laps and the consistency.

Is any turn speed comparison available?

This image (top right in the tweet below) taken from F1TV shows that Max used the C3 tyre for his fastest lap, Lewis used the C2. The C2 is harder than the C3.

Test 1, Day 2: Ricciardo tops first 90 minutes

Day 2 of pre-season testing at Barcelona went underway with AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly making his debut. He was the first to come out on track to get his first real taste with the AT01.

I think it's how he manipulates the clutch. He did it all of last year as well. Not sure about 2018, as I can't remember.

i think they must have an ergonomist in the team, they did those finger slot holes in a lever as well. He stabilises the whole palm of his hand on the top of the wheel and uses two or three fingers in a pinch grip, which gives him the best fine control, basically he takes the rest of the hand out of it so only those fingers are moving, relative to the wheel
I see, thank you both!

SkySports hasn't figured it out yet, but it seems that the steering wheel movement on the Merc affects toe angle:

I don't think this can be banned either, at least not under the movable aero rule. This is a change in handling dynamics, not aero efficiency. This might be a clever innovation up there with the F-duct.

I do Believe the word ‘MARKER’ pops up at the same time. There has just been footage of it popping up in a replay on the testing footage too.

They’re up to something no doubt!

My understanding is you’re also disallowed from adjusting suspension setup/geometry while the car is in motion.

Potentially the argument is it adjusts the steering rack?!

Real crazy either way. This is exciting!

The marker might just be Hamilton 'marking' the data as he does something (leaving the pit lane, pressing a certain setting etc) so they can easier see what it does/talk about it - but they are definitely up to trying something with that. So, nice to see something new in F1, not sure we've seen something quite this mechanic for a while (linked suspension was w/o driver input and not visible, so this is much more fun, I think ;)

It's skirting the "active suspension" rule. I'm really surprised they showed it. It would be smart to just use it at the filming day and keep it in the toolbox if they are challenged on track during season.

He is marking when he does it so they can analyze the data and what gains it brings.
