I've just checked the date for the EBD decision. The Technical Working Group meeting is on 16 June. After Montreal, before Valencia.

Exhaust Blown Diffuser Ban

Post

The ban on full Off Throttle blowning from silverstone. The rumoured 10% rule is going to happen but also a complete ban from 2012.

"Whiting believes this is illegal because it is using the moving parts of the engine to influence aerodynamics and therefore, in his opinion, contravenes a long-standing rule banning moveable aerodynamic devices.

Whiting's new restrictions have set a limit of 10% of throttle when the driver has lifted off the accelerator.

He has also defined the limits of engine mapping that will be permissible, in an attempt to limit increasingly exotic and complicated engine maps.

Teams will also be restricted in what they can change between qualifying and race, although in exactly what way has yet to be fully defined."

Complete Ban from 2012.

"For 2012, the exhaust system must exit behind the rear wheel centre line, actually 330mm behind, so right out the back of the diffuser."

Pretty far from the intent of the rule...I don't care if they ban it but I'd like them to be honest in their reasons

Agreed. The overrun systems actually prevent a change in aero characteristics with throttle movement.

Wow. I bet every team is suddenly wishing they could pump the exhaust out of the top of the sidepods again!

I'm really interested to hear what people think an optimal configuration for placing the exhausts are under this rule?

I can't think that any positioning would be beneficial, so what is the least harmful? Low and to the sides?

In addition my concern is that McLaren will be hit hardest by this ban come the British GP. Red Bull, for instance, have better diffuser performance simply from the rake of the car, but McLaren are relying on "tricks" to make their diffuser efficient. The evidence for this must be the performance jump they got when fitting the RBR type exhaust.

All exhausts have to exit behind the diffuser in 2012, If anybody is interested.

Relative to the exhaust system layout and location for the British GP, would you actually change anything? It is not like you are off the throttle very much.

I'm honestly not sure how much the ban will impact on the present exhaust solutions - I guess the drivers will have to work with the instability resultant from the change.

Perhaps I am overreacting to the impact on McLaren (perhaps even the lower CoG of the car will help them out?).

Oh, I reported the OP to get this thread merged with the "official" thread.

This is typical in F1.

Whenever 1 or 2 teams come up with an innovative device which gives an advantage sooner or later it gets banned. Par for the course sadly.

Re: Exhaust Blown Diffuser Ban

sorry I didn't realise there was another thread.. I looked before posting.

It's really interesting to see who this will have the most effect on.. any thoughts? Mclaren got a leap in terms of pace relative to Red Bull when they implemented it.. but only in terms of Red Bull who had the pace because they were already using it.

I think the Red Bulls use it to full advantage in quali, so maybe it will effect them more and their quali pace may be more relative to their race pace as a result.

If it really bothered the participants they would go elsewhere. I image that the creative types enjoy the change. At a minimum it is an honor to have your ideas acknowledge with a banning.

What is the difference? You come up with something new and everyone copies it in short order. The game is to have something very creative every 5-10 races to keep ahead of the competition. It buys you an advantage for a few races.

The whole point of the ban is due to the uneccesary burning of fuel.

Why have "green" tech like KERS which recuperates energy under braking, to then go and burn fuel in the exhaust to create an afterburner effect for added downforce?
More could have been done.
