Red Bull RB15

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The struts connect the diffuser top surface to the gearbox via the central rear wing support. The rear wing support forks around the exhaust.

So the struts connect the diffuser to the chassis at additional points compared with how it was before. It seems very likely this is for stiffening, whether against inertial loads or aerodynamic loads only Red Bull know.
It could be that having it flex somewhat will help stop vibrations. If something on the car is vibrating you dont want a bit wobbly part of the car connected to it. Could end up with oscillations that break parts of the car at the right frequency.

The front philosophy is intrigueing. It is more akin to what we originally saw with Williams, high up outboard pieces with the flap lowered, creating a difference in height at the flap adjuster line. Whereas Ferrari and similar designs have gone the complete opposite route.

Red Bull is probably trying to create a similar effect to what the outwash tunnels used to provide.

It has nothing to do with stiffening rear wing, exhaust or anything else, those kinds of struts would be placed on different locations.
It will though. The bases of the RW endplates attach to the diffuser. Some load will transfer through the endplates to deflect the diffuser corners downward. I'd be interested to know how much total RW, diffuser, and floor downforce is carried through the floor itself via it's attachments to the bases of the engine and gearbox. Structurally this is a poorer load path, like a diving board. It makes me wonder if the majority of rear wing down force is ultimately carried by the central rear wing support(s).

Interesting rear brake ducts on RB15 compared to RB14. The opening is on the top now

A bit of tech talk of the RB15 rear end.

Is it possible to make a the inlet stall (i.e the air not following the downward slope at hight speeds) to reduce drag and/or to keep brakes "warm" at the straights and only cool it below 250kph?

Tbh this would reduce the cooling effect by a lot. Ususally brakes where cooled down the whole straight and it was just enough to keep them from overheating. So we can easily drop this idea here.

Yep. There's no point in using a big duct and stalling it. You could just use a smaller duct and get the benefit of less drag overall.

This weeks rims look very similar to last years. Maybe A B comparison?

Curious if they changed something at the diffuser where they put that strakes last week. But only tiny amount of pictures today. Probably because everyone was freaking out over the Merc update...

Not sure if it's been pointed out, but the RB15 (uniquely?) routes the wastegate pipes beneath the upper suspension arms at the rear of the car.

Yup, the STR has them higher up. It looks like Red Bull pushed up their upper wishbone mounts from last year. It looks like the whole differential has been elevated some compared to last year. Isn't STR using last year's RBR rear?
