Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Seems a strange alignment?

Edit: Got it.

So front and rear wings are blown. As suspected and concluded way back in March.

Also you can see from the photo's that Morteza kindly put up that the most the air goes into and through the cockpit, to circumvent the law regarding the application of blown wings.

To me, this car would be an absolute nightmare to set up around a high downforce track like Barcelona for example.
The variance of pressures front and back, DRS on or off, high corner speeds etc must be tremendous. Others may copy this idea, but I doubt they will get both working in tandem as well as Mercedes have.

The rear DRS slot which was much fought over by Lotus and to a lesser extent Red Bull.
And the slots under the front wing which are in some part related to the twin pipes you see in the aforementioned pictures.

When the DRS is activate the rear wing is also blown allied to the front.

How do they set this thing up!?

Possibly Mercury suspension....

It's been known for quite some now that the front wing is blown. However, I don't think we've seen anything yet that might indicate the rear wing is blown, too.

I still think the DRS slots just serve to activate and deactivate the system.

it has to rotate in the same way as wheel
It is still odd. It is opposite to the knock offs that i have on two of my cars! Off side has reverse thread, not near side.[/quote]

The rotation depends on whether the "seat" ( i.e where the nut is seated against the wheel ) is concave or convex
IIRC- Lotus Elan vs Jag XK or E types

Actually, judging by the brake cooling dict, it's front left IMHO.

That almost makes it look like the Daffy Duct could be fed from air drawn in by the sidepods or even the exhaust.

Apologies, I did mean to say left, and that is why I was puzzled.

The overall times when looked at during actual sim time suggests Mercedes is about 1 second off the McLaren for pure race pace.
The fuel load variance could also be a factor as Mercedes will want to have tested Tyre degradation to its maximum...meaning running fatter around Barca.

There was clearly some work going on with all the antennae connected to Both W03 cars, but especially Schumacher's.

There has been some tinkering around the rear and the diffuser, I cannot find the pics, but will post it once I can find an unwatermarked copy.
The suspension component materials also look to have changed around the rear, Mercedes obviously trying to shift some mass away from the rear, to protect its tyres.

Ahh found one...

Also remarkable that Mercedes do not have the de rigour rear tail skirts as found on Most front running teams cars.

Compared to McLaren.

Maybe they'll put it on tomorrow? It is surprising though.

Indeed was about to post that.

Only Mercedes will know whether it does them any good or not. But I reckon they need some bolt on downforce on the arse of that car sharpish. Especially around Barca.

Any ideas on the tail skirts, and why Merc aren't pursuing this avenue?
