Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Hamilton was quoted as saying that after he lost 50-60 points of downforce from destroying the cars floor, he couldn't even take eau rouge flat, as if it was simply a formality that they were flat through there.

The Team or Race threads are the place for discussing speeds, lap times, and driver preferences, not the car threads.

Here is a pic of Merc's splitter with removed covers:

Does anybody know what this thing could be for?

Probably just some form leaf spring that deforms backwards as the splitter changes it's angle upwards which will then allow for much more flex so they can run the car lower without destroying the plank. It's setup that way so it can pass the specified FIA deflection mm/kg test and then after that it will yield.

Excuse the crude online paint drawing done using a trackpad, but I think you get the idea

Standard
Image
Fia test, lots of force, small deflection
Image
Exceeding that force by a small amount but lots of deflection as the material snaps backwards.

Easily tunable by changing the length, angles, and thickness.

That's a lot of wing for monza. Looks like they're taking a similar approach as in spa. Gonna be a murder-fest if there's even hint of rain on the track.

Today, as Nico locked his left front wheel which gave him some "on the limit" vibrations after due to the flat spot(s) the lock wasn't just a case of a locked wheel dragging and then releasing, it happened at least 3 times in that short amount of time. That reminded me of the operating principles of abs in cars.

Know, I know an F1 one driver is well capable of managing his brakes, but it also occurred to me if the portion of braking provided by the energy recovery system could be electronically tuned to reproduce such effect and therefore minimize or distribute a huge flat spot on the tire over smaller ones.
F1 drivers pump the brake to imitate abs IIRC

They will pump the brakes when the wheels lock, but until that point they pretty much go hard on the brakes and slowly release pressure through the braking phase I think.
