Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Why have they got black tape on the front wing pillars just above the connection with the main plane of the front wing?

There is some kind of wireing atached to the nose and wing, probably sensors, thats why.

I was under the impression that the floor could only have 'slots' and not 'holes'

I believe there was a technical clarification with RBR in 12/13. Please let me know if I am wrong on that..

native link missing, but it was 2012.

So, the forward pair of slots dont look open from this angle, i suppose we will have to wait for better pictures.

Those are slots. If you zoom in on the image you can see a small cut-line in about the center of the slot.

I need a higher res pic of that then, cuz thats just creative if thats the case. I love the minutia of this level of engineering, excellent thinkers..

the 3rd Element has changed too.

And i think the Nose looks good. Not as elegant as the Merc/Lotus Solution but better than the long one and due to the color nice and stealthy.

Edit:

Button says there is a possibility he gets the Update Package too for tomorrow.

Yep I think it looks much better. I just hope the engine works well enough to see whether the aero and chassis is decent after all.

excerpt from Autosport.
Despite the limited running, Boullier said signs were positive.

"At first sight, it looks like the new package is delivering what has been promised by the simulation," he said.

"I don't know the exact numbers as we have not done enough runs, but at least based on driver comments what they described on the car is what we were expecting.

"It's a new front wing concept around this short nose - new deflectors, new floor, new wing. More downforce, it's purely aerodynamic."

The upgrade was not run until practice two due to what Boullier described as a "paperwork" issue relating to its crash test.

"We had a little bit of paperwork to do with the FIA, it was a little misunderstanding," he said. "We had to show more information."

Although the upgrade was only scheduled to appear on Alonso's car in Austria, Button believes he could get use of it too.

"There's a chance I might be running with it tomorrow," he said.

I'm quite convinced your reasoning is correct but I'm not seeing it. I think it is closed there.

I think I'm seeing something like a small triangular cave in the floor in that area as well. It seems to have the perfect shape to put a sensor that can scan the complete width of the tire?

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Hopefully this is clear enough.

The red line indicates the (incredibly) small gap.

Nice example of 'rule interpretation'.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I remember from other 'holes' that the gap was more to the end of the hole and I was focusing more on the area of the yellow arrow. Didn't read your words well enough, sorry :?
