This is a bit surprising because in Melbourne they were 5 secs off the pace and today Alonso was 2.1 secs so if they reverted to Melbourne spec then ideally they should have been much slower.
Also, I am not sure if the new upgrades made a huge difference because in Q1 Alonso was 0.2 secs quicker than Button. Also in Q2 Alonso was 2.1 secs slower than the best car. Ideally I would have hoped that McLaren would have been 1.5 secs off the pace by making up 0.5 secs with this upgrade. With new engine taken up both by Alonso and Button and if it indeed is Melbourne spec then they will use the same engine in Silverstone. No way they can score points with that.
Another reason why they may have turned down the power is to ensure they dont have a double DNF. They need more data from both the cars and with 25 place grid penalty they will easily be 2 to 3 laps down so why not focus on testing and collecting as much data from the car to improve it.
Alonso was very positive after quali and said all of the upgrades worked fine,he also said after practice yesterday that he has new engine on,and it's better to run it in "safe mod".
The fact that he was only 2 tents faster than Jenson, well i will have to be honest now and say all though i am a bigg Fernando fan,Button did look a bit faster to me in Q all year long,i guess that is down to his experience whit the team and i sure Alonso will beat him in regular basis next year when they figt for title!
Despite poor Q end result for both cars, this seemd to be first Q of the year when both cars occasionally flashed near top of time table which is good.
Honda needs to bring those 7 tokens ASAP that's for sure. #progress
