McLaren MP4-26 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The lower plane was curved at release (as can be seen on this page) :)
That was 2010 wing, no DRS system. You can see what I mean by going back and forth between the 2 lol.

Wonder what hot thing is being channeled up from behind the engine and then out... It seems to be in front of the gear box...

Very noticeable flexing on the front wing, now. Seems they´re learning how to do it :D

The KERS cooling system is mounted above the engine/fuel tank. Might be part of that system...

It was jumping up and down like refried mexican jumping beans in the braking zone at the end of the back straight. All cars were bouncing to some extent, but Macca's were on the extreme.

The only ones that weren't were the Renaults. The RB7 was a bit bouncy and the McLaren and the Merc were really bad. Didn't seem to be affecting anyone though, strangely.

Probably simply a case of turkey having relatively flat kerbs, so you can get away with stiffening everything up and improving the handling.

Well, whatever it is, they also bounced to the top of the timesheets. So it can't be too bad for them.

with that mclaren surface finish i´m not really sure you can trust the thermal imaging.

To be honest, I think you can – it seems to be hot in all the places you would expect it to be – you can make out the position of the radiators pretty accurately, you can see the engine clearly, and you can see the airbox clearly – it's just that bit (KERS sounds pretty reasonable as a guess) above and behind the engine that doesn't seem easily explained.

Agreed. It is only reliable for showing the exhaust route after it leaves the engine cover. Other than that, all we know is that the engine cover is hot.

The effectiveness of the foil insulation will be variable because it relies on reflectivity, and that obviously varies with the varying angle of incidence due to the curvature of the bodywork. Also, there will be variation in radiance due to different coloured paints and stickers.

It should be reasonably accurate at such close proximity.

Guys, the surface is just a paint job. The thermal is accurate.
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.
