The penalty is not ridiculous IMO, neither is it Vettels fault, the team should have let him know Sainz was coming up behind him fast on a hot lap.
Whatever driver it is/was should get a penalty in those circumstances, again the driver [Vettel] is really not to blame, what with the rise of the circuit it makes it very difficult to see anyone behind in the mirrors, the team shoud have informed him but they didn`t, Sainz had to go off track and apparently damaged his front wing!
This is pretty much a standard penalty you see quite often, on a track so short like this the engineers really have to on the ball...
We could see some good scraps at the front now, I can see Kimi or Max getting Hamilton at the first corner, then some good action.
That's why in my opinion there is some form of scaling in penalties. What would be the worst possible scenario? Sainz crashing because of evasive action. That could be a 10 place drop or something equally harsh.
Now, Sainz progressed in Q3 (if he hadn't, it could be a 5 place drop) but he
did damage the front wing so that costs some money to the team + you don't know how the replacement piece is tuned with the rest of the car. Then there is the point of raising a penalty for exemplary reasons.
I'm not necessarily defending the penalty, I'm merely pointing out that it's not an illogical one by any means.
It wouldn't even get mentioned in the forum if it was Ericsson doing it to Sirotkin.
