3 place grid penalty for Vettel. Ridiculous.

Did anyone see the Vettel Sainz thing? How serious is it?
I would guess a 3 place grid penalty. Obviously it was not intentional, but Sainz had to take some serious evasive action.
Your crystal ball is pretty accurate!

That penalty robs away the show. Pretty harsh on Vettel's part.

Much like Vettel had to in Canada. Anyway, doesn't make much difference. Season is over already.

Wow. I am surprised. And i find it ridiculous to be honest.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

FIA jokers watched too much SKY.

I hope someone tells me that this penalty is a joke? How many times there have been such situations? How utterly ridiculous.

Race totally ruined unless something happens, for example a chaotic start or SC. Thank you stewards.

I can see it now. Mercedes get away clean and Raikkonen becomes a blocker with a RedBull between him and Vettel, thus stopping the Ferrari switch.

By the time of the pit stops it’s race over.

The irony is that there have been times that some stewards have been far to lenient with Vettel and yet this time they have done completely the opposite.

The penalty is not ridiculous IMO, neither is it Vettels fault, the team should have let him know Sainz was coming up behind him fast on a hot lap.
Whatever driver it is/was should get a penalty in those circumstances, again the driver [Vettel] is really not to blame, what with the rise of the circuit it makes it very difficult to see anyone behind in the mirrors, the team shoud have informed him but they didn`t, Sainz had to go off track and apparently damaged his front wing!

This is pretty much a standard penalty you see quite often, on a track so short like this the engineers really have to be on the ball...

We could see some good scraps at the front now, I can see Kimi or Max getting Hamilton at the first corner, then some good action.

It's pretty dangerous just cruising in the racing line - it's something that has to be stopped.
I don't find it particularly harsh but it does rob the show for tomorrow.

Red bull has a system where they switch driver position every weekend, during qualy. This weekend it was RiC’s turn to drive in front, but since he was running a higher downforce configuration he wanted to reverse the order and have VES run in front. In the end he forced the issue by almost stopping on track.

That's why in my opinion there is some form of scaling in penalties. What would be the worst possible scenario? Sainz crashing because of evasive action. That could be a 10 place drop or something equally harsh.
Now, Sainz progressed in Q3 (if he hadn't, it could be a 5 place drop) but he did damage the front wing so that costs some money to the team + you don't know how the replacement piece is tuned with the rest of the car. Then there is the point of raising a penalty for exemplary reasons.

I'm not necessarily defending the penalty, I'm merely pointing out that it's not an illogical one by any means.
It wouldn't even get mentioned in the forum if it was Ericsson doing it to Sirotkin.

If penalty is given to <Driver you like>, then stewards are a joke.
and when penalty is not given to <Driver you hate>, then stewards are a joke.

Come on people, you can't have it both ways.
