What does a chrome mould do differently to a normal one?
Mario Isola wrote:"The reason why we introduced this technology is because the hypersoft last year and the C4/C5 [softest 2019 compounds], are very sticky and, when you vulcanise and cook the tyre, it is difficult for the mould sometime.

"You see small imperfections on the tread because of this adhesion between the compound and the moulds. With the new moulds, they are a lot better.

"They look nicer, in terms of technology it is better but the specification is the same that we used in Abu Dhabi [test] last year."
Thanks Morteza! Quite interesting that they have only just switched to Chrome moulds when it looks like Michelin and Bridgestone were using them during the tyre war era.

Very pleased that all 4 power units have been pounding out laps without a hiccup.

Is it just me or is Merc pulling the same bs as last year where they aren't even going to attempt to set a fast lap?
Why is it "bs"? This is testing. It's about getting to know the car, making sure it's doing what you expect etc. Certainly at this stage, fastest lap isn't important, so long as they know what it is capable of.

What I find interesting is Ferrari going out there and do quick laps so early on. Maybe that was the plan, maybe Vettel just wanted to make a point. Who knows?

Personally, I think the lack of soft compound hot laps last year hurt them early on in the season when they where destroying their tires.

I guess it shows that the other brands you mentioned are way ahead of Pirelli when it comes to racing tires technology.

They should atleast check if their DRS is working! Last winter testing, they did not even bother about ordering Ultras and Hypers. The whole day, they have been pounding around with C2.

And had zero problems with tires for the rest of the season? I don't think they'll make the same mistake again if they can help it.

Are Mercedes running without DRS?

Been watching since Sky started the broadcast, but yet to see that DRS open on that Mercedes.
