Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They only have a tunnel because they need to re coup losses from installing an exhaust ramp, Merc don't have that problem.

The tunnel might be better then an open coke bottle area.

as i understand the coke bottle is there to minimise convergeance of flow between engine cover sidepods and rear tyre -and is in a ways the equivalent of a high nose ? I don´t think the tunnels can provide any of that it´s a completly different matter of connecting flow coming from the front wing to the diffuser.

They could use an RB7 type tunnel if they wanted. But there's not much need because they dont blow the starter hole, they just control the flow over the center of the diffuser. I don't believe it's really that significant, it's just a little extra body work that allows them to run a slightly higher and more profiled gurney.

they are doing that, the outer tunnel blows the starter motor hole,

Would hardly compare that to this tunnel. thats just 2 ducts at the end so the air actually went into the starter hole.

Which is why it would be more suitable to the W03, putting a tunnel in the middle of the floor for no reason would make no sense on the W03 unlike the RB7 ducts which could work.

Canada was low Drag, and Valencia is relatively too. But the cascades are still gone for Silverstone? Interesting...
