guessing honda has put in the mk2 unit. mclaren has started the day cautiously , i guess they would be running the same set of tests (they ran on mk1 unit) to find out whether "rogue unit" product is better or not.

It will be interesting to see if they maintain that reliability when they switch to the other PU for the 2nd test.

More importantly if the PU can last a race(or some laps) when they put it on full power.

There was a report that the car is still slow in the fast sections but the technical section was 3 top behind two supersoft tyred cars. So chassis is doing great....engine....not so ....at the moment

Why do people continue on comparison for Top speed, do you not listen to McLaren when they said there not chasing times at the moment. They haven't even set-up the car for a quick lap as of yet! give them a chance to get the data they need and I am sure they will show there hand. They aren't going to beat Ferrari and Mercedes at this stage so I doubt they will be topping the timesheet's, sure all these figures including speed traps will improve but people expect to much to soon.

Generally it seems, in this new formula, that if you are able to just put fast lap right out of the box (like currently Merc, Ferrari and somewhat RBR are doing) and do it every time, it means you are relatively fast. If your times in 3 days are underwhelming and speed traps say you are way down there its most likely case that you are. It was like that in 2014 when Renault and Ferrari powered teams were struggling massively, and it was case last year when Renault was struggling and Ferrari engine was quick right of the bat.

They may have fixed most of the ERS issues they had, but I reckon they are still down at least 70-80hp. Fernando was quoted saying that was worth .5 seconds. Everyone expected that to be in region of 1.5 seconds at least so that tells me they may not be much better then in Abu Dhabi once everyone go for quali sim. Just IMO.

The thing is that Macca fans have been suffering for the last 2 years of high hopes during tests and rightfully the following season had been as bad as the pre season test performance showed.

At the moment they are around 1.5s slower. I don't think the upgraded engine will reduce the deficit entirely.

If they are 1.5s down, it's good. By my calculations they need to improve to be 2.0s down as Haas...

But there is hope in next week's engine.
