I'm guessing the W12 we saw in Bahrain is not the W12 we will see in Bahrain.

Was this posted after the test? The tokens thing is very intriguing. So many hints about it being obvious, but definitely nothing obvious on the car in the last few days.

Ah! Thanks very much! Post test indeed, then.
So unless the team is doing an inexplicable epic troll job on their own fans, there is still something quite significant to come which they are keeping shrouded in secrecy.

You are very welcome! It's difficult to pin down. AMuS just had a fairly extensive interview regarding the technical behavior of the car with Merc engineers, and I posted that in the W12 technical thread.

As a summary here, they are concerned about the rear end instability, they don't think that the floor changes for '21 are necessarily the culprit, they don't think low-rake cars are inherently disadvantaged, they could fix the balance in one corner, but then the problem would surface in another, and they don't believe an upgrade will necessarily solve the issue.

They don't yet know whether the flaw is fundamental, but if it is, it will show in the data.

I think it's going to be something around the diffuser. Running a "quick and dirty" test diffuser would explain them having rear end stability issues during the test.

Whatever it is, they know it's requires tokens being spent: so they know that once everyone turns up at the first race their secret is safe from being copied for the whole season. Let's hope, for their sake, that it really is the magic bullet they think it is.

It's my suspicion as well, given what's gone on. Something they really don't want anyone else to be able to use at all, which sits on the back section of the car. Perhaps similar to what McLaren have done. They must be very confident it's a game changer which others will want to copy.

If they are doing this - bringing something clever to the first race - and it works, putting them back at the front of the grid again, there are going to be some very unhappy people around the place!

So they either have another Diva on their hands, or the very short and sporadic nature of testing this year has really hammered them. My gut says it's the later, because over the last several years any time practice was cut short or the weather conditions have been adverse they have struggled with setup relative to their opponents.
Continuing this convo from the technical thread, since my reply will mostly address performance.

I agree it could be either of those things. The AMuS piece seems to indicate is that at least the performance/pace, in and of itself, is there. It just cannot be consistently extracted until the drivers are confident in the rear (and until the rear itself physically behaves as expected).

Which ties back into your diva comment.

I'd tell you, but it would be a clear violation of the Temporal Prime Directive.

is it possible that mercedes is doing 2019 again. they brought the first spec to the testing as a baseline, collect the data and use the filming days to measure the upgrades (not optimum, but worth the risk). not doing filming day in traditional manner and changing the procedure is suspicious and add to that the secrecy over token spend. considering this one off season, development restrictions and need to move resources to 2022 car, the more they delay any significant, copy-able ideas, the better it is to stop competition from copying it and carry the advantage longer. just a theory.
