Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

they have been doing this every year .. preparing for next year

but on the other hand they could easily be testing new things and see which of them work or don't

they are hiding their progress just as they were the top notch team ... and they are not

they should start making updates through the year ... it's not enough to say "yeah we are like stopping the development of this years car becuase we are currently focusing on next years car" ... and what happens? BS happens and story repeats!

That is correct. The avergae person does not see behind the scenes where updates are planned out for the year. A lot of the updates we see that have come out and will come are months in the making. So switching the 2014 car from now, doesn't mean no more updates are coming. They probably have updates backlogged all the way up to November.

Correct me if i'm wrong but this year they have chosen for a long wheelbase. The w03 has the longest wheelbase of all the cars this season. The wo2 suffered because of the "short" wheelbase and the "long" wheelbase is not breaking egs neither.

Maybe they should consider a more conservative design instead of being the longest or shortest on the track?

Downgrading the 3 elements front wing back to the 2 elements of the w02 is also a sign that something smells funny at Brackley.

I'm really curious what they will bring and this time they shouldnt try to win the lotery with stuff like their "inky winky rear wing system.

What are the further improvements Brawn is talking about here?
The Hockenheim layout should be more suited to the F1 W03 than the high-speed Silverstone layout, and we are bringing some further improvements to the car which should help our performance.

Off course some unvisible upgrades and suspension set-ups for using tires more effectively, but I wish they will prove me wrong. :(

Hold on though, although the points tally doesn't show it, they have made progress this year. They got a win and a second (which could have been a win, as the car appeared to be genuinely faster) on merit. The MS podium was lucky, granted.

They really aren't a mile of front running pace, but the group did bunch up. So one small ----up and you're suddenly 10 places back. Not even to mention these diabolical tyres - which only Lotus, RB and Ferrari (to a degree) seems to understand.

For all we know, those things that smell 'funny' like the wheelbase and the wing helped them catch up and get some decent results this year. Few and far between, granted, but last year they had nothing and the year before they had 3 'luck podiums'.

I concur, surely the three, or perhaps even four, kings are bitching over the general concept for the W04 as we speak.

Given there will be one that is.
We do not see much of the kings at the track as the general concept is set in carbon already to get everything ready in time.
Mercedes aagain not hitting the ground really running is hinting at them again questioning aspects of the general layout -
By the looks of things nobody followed in developping a ddrs system for example-another dead end development money sink?
I´´m a bit concerned they really shift their focus wildly around (wheelbase ,nose height, blade and no blade rollhoops ,mercury suspension ,double rads etc etc ) to abandon these concepts after short time.

But let´´s be patient with w03 here it has delivered this year and saved x from ingesting a nomex suit in Hockenheim, right'?

right ..and balaclavas are single layer...if I´m correct ....
I have the gut feeling Mercedes will put a "monza" spec engine in Schumachers car next weekend ,only to please Bernie who needs good media in germany these days ..as do mercedes GP .Schumi on top of the podium would be just as good as a williams win on his 70s birthday ,don´´t you think so?

What, are you actually suggesting that some MHPE engines would be more equal than others, naaah....?
-
More likely MrE will see to that MS gets Pirelli Le Mans spec rubber, which will mysteriously provide both grip and life.

But the team will of course get everything wrong, mixing up the tyres, why NR will run away with the race?

is it more downforce really?
I´d think the main thing is to produce downforce AND redirect airflow around the front wings without creating too much drag.
It seems the advantage of running cascades is diminished by development of Mainflap and endplate in case of Mercedes. And why run it when you see no advantage doing it.
