Ferrari F138

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Actually, this design is not new. It was tested IIRC at least since Singapore [photo][photo], as it came along with this last major front wing revision.

It looks like the car is already on vacation, with or without updates.

Fry and friends fiddle with a fading Ferrari (try saying that fast). Meanwhile, who can condemn Alonso for being frustrated? We (Tifosi) must hope the 2014 car is a significant departure from the current design philosophy, which produced cars that just were not fast enough. I hope Allison takes a new dirction.

Ohhh ohhh, those flow viz traces don't look really well. Seems the flow around the coke bottle completely detaches. There appears to be a complete stagnation area underneath the exhaust / cooling air outlet area.
Probably too much obstruction from the huge hot air exhaust combined with too agressive waist due to the vertical coolers causing too high of an adverse pressure gradient. The result will be no significant flow to the whole upper side of the center section of the diffuser and thus loss of a lot of Diffuser efficiency/effectiveness. If this was not a one off due to specififc circumstances I start to feel they have a massive problem in that area. This would also explain why the car doesn't seem to react to the different versions of the exhausts. Exhaust blowing itself might simply not be their main problem.

Isn't that just where the exhaust gases are hitting the floor, and thus splitting the airflow?

I was referring to the fact that the flow viz isn't following the coke bottle at all. It is going straight to the back. Normally you would hope to have the flow following the waist at least partially so that you have clean and fast flow also over the center section of the diffuser.
That doesn't appear to be the case here. The flow only starts to move inward directly in front of the exhaust plume.
But by then all energy in the flow will have been lost. You can infer that also by the angle at which it moves around where the exhaust is hitting the floor.
That is not good for the diffuser effectiveness since it will reduce effective expansion ratio.

Ferrari didin't use the updated turning vanes in FP3 on both cars. If I am correct Alo is running the monkey seat, instead Mas is not running it.

And also the rotating camera is now mounted on Rai car. :D

Nice drawing!
The trouble indeed seems to be in the void area between the green lines and the coke bottle. there should be airflow but it seems there isn't any significant flow there.

Did I understand it correctly? Airflow doesn't let for exauhst gases to stay attached to floor?
