Steering Wheels 2013

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Yes, of course.

Hamilton uses Kers with a shift paddle on the back side of the steering wheel, while Nice has a button on the front.

Mclaren had or still have as far as I know the DRS linked into accelerator and pushing past flat out.
I wonder if he will get that setup on his Merc or maybe its not worth it now they only have to use DRS max twice a lap.

Of course. I also see the bottom left rotary also seems to be inactive. I wonder why they didn't put a blanking plate in those three locations?

Perhaps there are buttons missing on the back too.

Heres a selection of 2012 & 2011 wheels:

Mercedes AMG W03:
Rosberg:

Schumacher:

Differences:
* MSC has a reset button where ROS has a Beep button
* MSC & ROS have different colours for BPF (Bite point Find)
* MSC has a DWN function on the multi function totary foR DRS to stay permanantly in the fail placement
* MSC has a shade over the MES ECU display and the final three red LEDS covered with tape.

However, MSC Changed again mid season:

Caterham-Renault CT01:
Petrov:

Heikki:

Differences:
* In 2012 KOV was developing the steering wheel to give it better useability on the rotaries. His wheel was constantly in delelopment mode.

REAR:

HRT-Cosworth F112:

Both Drivers:

Marussia-Cosworth MR01:

Comparison to Marussia Virgin-Cosworth MVR-02:

Both Drivers:
Image

STR-Ferrari STR7:

Both Drivers:
Image

* Very little has changed here since 2010

Force India-Mercedes VJM05:

Both Drivers:
Image

* Same as STR, not much change since this wheel was introduced in mid 2010, just a the addition of the DRS ready LED.

Sauber-Ferrari C31:

No Idea who is whos;

Image

* +1 & +10 buttons different, thats all.

Williams-Cosworth FW33

All Drivers:

Lotus-Renault R31:

Another with little change since the R31 of 2011

Williams hasnt really changed much since 2011, the FW 33 and FW34 have had the same wheel, so FW35 will be simmilar:

The big one i found this week,

Red Bull-Renault RB8:

Vettel:
Image

* Im still trying to decypher this one, im about 85% to 90% but am thrown by the dual switches at the bottom labeled Default.

As for ferrari, theirs seems to change year in year out as Fernando likes to dabble in electronics functionality. At Renault he had a dedicated Electronics engineer for changing layouts over quick enough for him. Massa follows him at Ferrari, the only difference in wheels at Ferrari is Massa likes a chunky grip and Alonso likes a thin and skinny grip.

For 2014 id expect to see some major changes on the wheels for the new engine formula.

Force India's wheel seems to be refreshingly simple.

Apperently STR and RBR are roughly using the same layout. Has more a gamecontroller-like appearance. I certainly see Vettel's influence there.

They also have a "tyre" rotary. What part of the car is being controlled by this to have influence on the tyres?

When you have different tires on they have different diameter. it affects your speed reading.(pit speed limiter)

The rotary has too many options for just 4 different tyres.

The Red Bull wheel was actually purchased from McLaren, can't find the source, but David Coulthard spoke about it, he asked Red Bull to take the designs as it was the wheel he was most comfortable with.

Done my research on the Sauber wheels, the one with the white + & - buttons is for Kamui and the one with the black +1 and +10 is Sergios.

As soon as Newey moved to RBR they also moved the dash display out of steering wheel and still in 2012 it is out of the steering wheel
So I guess it was Newey who wanted it out of the wheel, mclaren just followed the trend until someone or Lewis changed it
the mclaren design (dash off the wheel) was carried over by DC i seem to remember in an interview. As RBR was a new team he got them to, i guess buy, that technology from mclaren.
