Apparently Merc ran their engines in a conservative mode in Spa after the failures. Could be a lot quicker here if they have those issues resolved.

Mostly affected qualifying. Gap to LEC would have probably been 4 or 5 tenths instead of 7 tenths (HAM's best sectors would have put him c. 0.5-0.6s back)

But how do u know his best s1 and s3 sectors when they ran conservative mode in s1 and s3?? #-o

Btw how strong is the slipstream this year! There is massive difference to last years cars... so this is going to determine the pole in italy

The 0.5-0.6s gap would have been had HAM nailed his best sectors together (with lower PU mode). From Toto's comments, the engine mode would not have made a material difference (a tenth or two at most). 3-4 was the best the team could have done ultimately, as VET's best sectors would have put him 0.2s off LEC.

Where did Toto say that a tenth or two is what their maximum engine mode is worth? Any link or source

Mercedes said on their youtube channel that the slipstream in Spa is worth about 0.3-0.5s. In Monza it obviously will be a lot more. I wouldn't be surprised if Monza quali turns into a total clusterf**k when everyone wants to get behind someone, and by the end of Q3 suddenly 2- 3 cars in the back decide they have to pass the cars in front or their session will be over before passing the finish line, and then of cause the cars in front their final Q3 lap will be completely f**ked. Parabolica, being a relatively fast corner, will only make it worse because you need some distance to build up the speed.

I bet this kind of quali slipstream ridiculousness will reach a new height next year.

Which put's him in front of Vettel at the start, potentially challenging Charles off the line (Hamilton made a good start).

If he is already in front of Vettel I think he would win that race comfortably.

He didn't say specifically, but his comments implied that higher PU mode wouldn't have changed the outcome of qualifying.

Agreed. Q3 will be a total mess with multiple frustrated drivers after quali.

I didn't. You're reading way too much into this. Regardless of how VET performed, Ferrari was always going to get pole here with a clean lap. That was Toto's point.

As for my "opinion", it's a fact that HAM's best time would have been 0.5-0.6s off LEC - just sum up the sector times yourself if you want to have a look. A small incremental engine mode wouldn't have bridged that gap.

Loved how he cheekily asked Ferrari to kindly provide everyone else with a slipstream since they already have such a good top speed. =D>

I wonder if we'll see anyone trying to overtake someone at the start of the hotlap into turn 1, maybe team tactics with cars that might have to take some engine penalty trying to help their team mate.
