25,4 mm, it's common knowledge
even in engineering classes most don't know that.
And a limited study in my family showed that only 1 of 8 people knew that.
I thought it was common knowledge, but most of my friends are of a technical education, and into cars, so they know what an inch is :-D

But I would really hop that the united states would jump on the metric bandwagon, as the inch is an irritating unit to work with when we get CAD models from american sub suppliers.

NASA a place of the most brilliant minds in America uses the metric system, that should say it all
:D
Because it was started by Germans imported under Operation Paperclip.

Wait till you get to the oil and gas industry, being American based it has it's own measurements.

The most baffling one is measuring the height of a wellhead, it's measured in feet and tenths of feet!

10 inches to the foot in the USA

btw aren't threads eg on brake fittings etc universally made via inch-based design dimensions ?
(as bike threads universally use inch-based pitch dimensions eg 24 tpi at least)

the metric 'system' (invented by a prime nerd) is obsolete
something more octal or hexadecimal-based would be better overall

Babies are also talked about in imperial here in Australia despite being a metric country eg every parents knows that 9 pounds is a big one, but if you say 4.x kilograms they’ll stare at you blankly!

Same in Canada, it is difficult for me to not default into thinking of weight in terms of pounds. Most people also estimate measurements in inches or feet. It is just so ingrained unfortunately.

As an engineer, actually for some things it makes the calcs simpler, bit that's the exception really. Density and mass - learning how to properly use consistent units for simulation was a most aggravating experience. Slinches? What the actual F.

That's exactly how imperial users feel about metric. A real pain in the ass.
Great! Then you can help me put my 3/16", 5/8" and 9/16" sockets in order! :)

Surely it's trivial to know that there are 220 yards in a furlong, or 32 fluid onces in a quart! Couldn't be easier! :D

Heh, that's not a failing of the measurement system, that's a failing of your maths teachers. 8) They're just fractions, taught to children before decimals in many parts of the world.

Great, now you can cross-reference the caliper measurement of the nut (not in fractions) to the appropriate spanner. 8)

What goes inside the tire is also imperial. PSI.

It depends, some car manufacturers specify kPa or Bar instead... You are quite right that Pirelli specifies psi for some reason. :)

The nice thing about metric for temperature is the scale, if it’s 100c outside you are dead, if it’s -100c outside you are dead and in the middle at 0c you are merely cold!
