I think its not the amount of overtaking that upsets people, but the style.

Long drags followed by hairpins is ok but we (i) want to see cars tucked up in the corners. Driver skill is invariably shown in the corners, when im racing and i know im faster than the driver in front, i hold back slightly on the approach to the entry and really attack the corner, knowing that by the exit i will be tucked under the car and faster allowing me to pull out and slingshot past. Long or short straight doesn't really matter cos ive done all the hard work in the corner.

Because you cant follow in the corners these days, your reliant on using the long straight to just squeeze by in to the apex of a tight corner. This is so boring to watch its almost unbearable.
