Thank you Scarbs and all the others. :D
I thought it would not be large enough to hold a good amount of tungsten or what ever they use today. And a heavy projectile in that space in case there is an accident...nope, don't wanna think about it.
So it is a sensor measuring the distance between the laser and the track. http://www.optimess.de/goe.htm

Sensing -car speed? Slip-angle of what?
The sensor uses two lasers and two sensors, one detects the road speed and the other slip. Slip angle is the angle of the car to the direction of travel. This is used along with steering angle to detect the front ends behaviour, for example a lot of steering angle and a small angle suggests understeer, as the tyres aren’t turning the car enough.
Speed is sensed by this device as well as the pitot tubes on the top of the car, as they can only detect air speed, which is the cars road speed plus any wind speed

Would this be to boost the engineers feedback if for instance the driver wasn't that technical?

No, it would be used whether the driver was any good or not, its provides the engineers with actual figures to work from.

INDY FINS DETAIL (FLIP UPS)

1.Double profiled indy fin
2.Vertical endplate
3.The indy fin ( flip-ups) starts from the middle side section of the sidepods
4.The vertical extension of the Indy fin covers the inner profile of the rear wheels so as to prevent turbulence generated by the wheel’s rotation from reaching the rear wing .

Are any photos available of the supposed "radical" new F2008 nose? (Of course, these days "radical" seems to mean "a change actually visible to the naked eye"!)

I'd imagine they'd run slip angle sensors in practice, quali, and race. It's very valuable data (along with lateral and yaw rate accel sensors) for a race engineer, and tire manufacturer for that matter.

COCKPIT FRONT AREA DETAIL

There are two “pimples” on both sides of the chassis in front of the cockpit to satisfy the minimum width FIA rule for this area . F2008 had these "pimples " since launch time . This is another area ( others are the engine cover area with the blade fins and the airbox )where a team tries to reduce the car surface thus drag by using clever solutions and bending the rules

The " pimple " in front of the cockpit is there to split the airflow to both sides of the driver's helmet to reduce drag .

Ferrari was one of the few teams to use front and rear wheel rim shields for the first 3 races ( 2 of them were hot ).
