KERS CONTROL UNIT

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Maybe it makes sense to merge the cooling systems, it depends on the difference of the temperature between this two circuits.
Batteries need cooling too, i forgot. :P
Now, i'll go to sleep, its nearly 5am here :)

This makes my wonder, with all this cooling needed, the only reliable way for the FIA to police the 400kJ/60kW rule, will be to monitor Torque and Rpm in and out of the MGU, correct scarbs?

I think there is jet another (much simpler) way! Just make sure that the teams only use batteries (or flywheels) that can only store 60kW! That would encourage the teams to develop more efficient solutions (because if you transform electric energy to mechanical energy you always loose some)! + There is no need to monitor Torque and Rpm! + No Cheating!

I never said LI-ION, simply LI as I don’t know for certain what specific type they are. The chemical battery systems are certainly DC.

THE MGU IS water cooled, I couldn’t tell if the battery or PCU are water cooled, they were not finned and hence could be. I am lead to believe they are integrated into the engines water cooling system. Most of the cars have a relatively small inlet in the sidepods for KERS cooling, backing up this theory. Only the BMW has large inlets and outlets for air cooling.

This is the Apple Video on LiPo batteries. It gives some insights into the manufacturing process of the batteries, design considerations for laptops and charging technology. Some of it will be radically different for race car applications but the principles should be very simillar.

I wonder if the battery being placed under the fuel tank may actually heat up the fuel, causing it to expand, and gain pressure in the fuel system.

I don't know if that would be a benefit or a hindrance, since you would think that colder fuel would give more power, but more pressure may outweigh the temperature increase.

Any ideas?

Maximum fuel pressure in the fuel rails is mandated and monitored by the FIA, teams are already at the maximum (100bar IIRC), so I doubt there’s a benefit. From what I’ve seen of the KERS and cars (including a Mac monocoque mould!) the KERS is totally external to the monocoque. The MGU sits where the bottom of the oil tank used to go, the battery and PCU sitting alongside the tub, by the rads.

Hi scarbs, do you have any information about the Williams KERS?
From what i know it uses a flywheel as a replacement for the batteries, and the system is electrical.
Thanks

I never knew there was so much info on these batteries! It fills like 10 pages at that link...

But it also brings a new perspective to the safety issue, because as some of the vids at that link show, they burn fast and HOT... Not something that I would feel comfortable putting under the fuel tank...

Check out the Williams web site for their new comany on KERS. It has a very informative grafic of the system.

There is also a very interesting Flash video of the F1 system.

I wonder... Is it possible that this is going to make it into F2 since Williams makes those chassis? Or would it have to come from Audi?

It would be a great way for Williams to defer costs of the KERS system I would think, not to mention a TON of testing miles outside of F1.
