Re: Nationalism in F1

What a wonderfully sensible thread. To be honest I was trying to draw out the issues that have sprung up in the USF1 and the Lotus thread. It seems that when discussed in the abstract everyone is jolly sensible. However as soon as a team or driver is mentioned then the temperature rises.

Take a look at the Lotus thread. A few people mentioned that the Lotus name was associated with one person and perhaps it’s a shame the name is being used a fig leaf for a new start up team. Then before you know it, the thread is broken down to swinging hand bags at 10 paces because of nationality.

The USF1 thread is equally blighted. Admittedly the flames have been fanned by the British-Australian boss banging on about it being all American. Aligning the team so resolutely with the flag means that any criticism of the team is by extension criticism of the flag.

... but heh, what do I know about allegiance to a flag? I come from a country where nearly half the people fly the flag upside down and the resident F1 teams race under German, Malaysian and (until recently) Japanese flags.

I'll explain why it is bad in any sport. It's the idiotic semantics of media reporting that goes on since day 1.

News headlines:

"England beats Germany"

"Italians superior than Russians"

"Hungarinas better than Austrains"

"Americans dominate over Canadians"

etc.

Such semantics emitted in large masses via media only boosts nationalism, xenophobia etc. It is an absolute generalization of whole nations based on some stupid sport event.

Where it turns into something ugly is the point where people get unaware that other nationalities have the same natural right to also promote and enjoy their heritage and achievements. This is what we usually call nationalism. It is universally seen as a bad thing. When it comes to isms I believe that they are all pretty bad. Nationalism, racism, sexism, religious fundamentalism all share the same root. They separate humans in different categories and say that some are good and some are bad based on arbitrary group aspects.
While I think this is well-done and that you're correct on the -isms sharing the same root, I think you're incorrect as to why it happens.
Sartre wrote:If the Jew did not exist, the Anti-Semite would invent him.
People that get deep into these -isms do so because they don't have much going for them to begin with and they need to make themselves feel better. So what do they do? They say "Well, atleast I'm not ____________." That's it, they start to define themselves by what they're NOT. People don't join white supremacist groups because they dislike fried chicken or burritos or even because they may think brown people cause crime or violence or whatever else. They do it simply to remind everyone that they're not brown and that it's a point of pride for them.

Here's an example we may be familiar with: a member who's so proud of NOT being Australian that he starts throwing epithets around whenever the Down Under comes up. Not just that, but he goes out of his way to register a new account to post
You know who wrote:“Australia became an independent nation on 1 January 1901. The British Parliament passed legislation allowing the six Australian colonies to govern in their own right as part of the Commonwealth of Australia.”
Why? Seems so innocuous, yet why (re-)register just to post that? To remind the Brits that they're NOT Australian!, seemingly in hopes of lifting their spirits. (FWIW, I hear Australia's a lovely place, provided you don't eff with the wildlife.)

Sorry to re-print this next bit but it took quite a bit of restraint not to flip out at the time:
You know who wrote:If it wasn't for slavery, these same people would be running across the savannah in a loin cloth hoping to catch something for dinner tonight. Instead, the horrid toll was paid for them, so they could become educated people, overfeed their children, and use the internet to bitch about what they obviously do not understand.
Does he feel superior because of the loin cloths? Because his ancestral home had meadows instead of savanna? Because he doesn't use the internet to bitch? (lol) No, he feels superior because this is a position he'll never be in, and why, because he's NOT black. It's that easy, be born white and (if you're a c*ck) you can feel great for NOT being black.
WB wrote:Waving a flag and cheering for people you identify with is fine.
So to bring it back to F1, I think you're absolutely right about this. If McL wants to say "We're proud of ourselves because we're based in Britain, we've got two MBEs driving our cars and we're doing pretty effing well" I don't see any problem with that.

But if you're going to say "Our car will be done quickly because Europeans are lazy and it's cold there and we're NOT Europeans except for me and that Welshman over there" then you're going to get tagged as an -ist.

Sorry to run on but it's great to see this conversation happening without being an outrageous and hurtful tangent. Thanks Richard.

As previous posters said, let's support who we want, when we want. I'd at to that why we want.

Back in the Schumi-Mika days, I used to support Mika over schumi because McLaren were the British team, and Mika seemed a nicer guy than Schumi.

Nowadays I take a bit of delight when things go wrong for Mclaren because I've somewhat fallen out of love with them; the highly corporate attitude, the excessive professionalism, the way that the british media fawn over Hamilton and can see him doing no wrong...

Also the local team is now Red Bull- they may race under a swiss flag, the drivers might be from germany and XXXX, but around town I'm always bumping into people with Red Bull jackets on. Even ended up sitting next to the junior drivers at the football a few times.

So I'd say that its very much people supporting the teams they can identify with; and I think that is a great way to bring added emotion to the sport.

And emotion is always what the sport is lacking in- there's no better sight than the tifosi under the podium at monza, or schumi running down the pit lane for a swing at DC- these are the moments that bring the sport to life. Bernie and max would do well to remember that.

Yeah you got nationalism and then you got people from the same country that fights because they suppor X or Y state in the national championship. They kill each other over the national season and then they sit and drink together to watch their national team matches in the world cup. Its the time everyone loves its country. Everyone is as patriotic as it can be. Then World cup is over. Then they begin fighting again, `X` vs `Y` state. And also that all goes deeply into the `school A` vs `school B` level.

Its the conservatives that said: "familia, patria & tradicion" ???
(family, patriotism and tradition)

Its the anarchist that said: "ni dios ni patria" ???
(no god, no patriotism)

Its the Satan Church that said: "thou what you wilt" ???

They all fail to see that the idea should never be above the men.

Then I also fail to see the men as a that good thing. Yeah, sometimes we suck, dont we? We lack downforce, we need the double deck diffuser version of ourselves:

These are a small sample of threads moderators love:

"Gay drivers in F1"
"Bernard Ecclestone sucks"
"Women drivers"
"Global warming, true or false? Have your saying"
"Jerez 97"
"Hamilton rules"
"Alonzzo Rulez!"
"Button sucks"
"The best 10 drivers in F1, according to Racing Ultimate Super Hyper Sport Magazine"
"Quizzes, quizzes, quizzes"
"The truth about americans in the moon"
"Best sportcar to buy"
"The Buy-Viagra thread"
"A new idea for qualies"
"Point systems in history"
"Worst driver ever"
"Dimples in golf balls"
"Nationalism in F1"

Do you see a pattern here?

Now, on thread:

Please, people, mature! Nationalism in F1? We don't take that in account. For example, taking a member of this forum at random, let's take me. I've never supported a driver just because of his nationality.

(Go, Juan Pablo! We love you! We want to have your sons! You're a giant among dwarfs!).

It's not like if people is stupid enough to use the pretext of nations to get involved with one driver and get stuck in the TV, isn't it? We're not that dumb. Who would watch a TV program just because he gets emotionally attached to one of the characters, no matter how common and stupid the character is? What do you want me to watch, some kind of Reality TV?

(Go, JPM, colombians are the best, you're good even when you're bad!).
