What happened to Charles?
Not his best track..

It wouldn't show as much during the race so he might still win depending on the start.

Yesterday some people on here and also AMuS talked about the high possibility of Mercedes having gone for a wet setup (which I agreed with), hence being able to bring the tyres into their working range in cool qualifying conditions.
But then what about Mercedes being nowhere in FP3 when it actually was wet? Have they radically changed their setup between FP3 and qualifying again?

Im sort of smelling a Hamilton win.... Or it could be gym socks?! That's what Hamilton wins smell like they say.
I'm smelling it too. It's his track, if he can clear the Alpine at the start he can be a real threat.
He focused more on race these days.

any idea what strategies will look like today? Is a S-M one-stopper possible?

The hard tyre looked slow on Friday, and now it's much colder, so I'd guess teams don't want to use it. But on the other hand, ons stop more is an issue as well on this track...

If the rest of the field is far enough for the extra stop the two stopper must be faster like Hamilton did in 2019. The hard were terrible and the deg will be high today.

This is Mercedes. They won't give Lewis a win over George if George does the job in the first half of the race. The only way Lewis wins over George is if George drops it or there is a fortunate safety car.

But the reality is that Charles is going to win unless he, or Ferrari, do something stupid.
Now what would make you think that?

yeah, but it could be fairly close, especially if Russell wins the start. Haven't seen a fully tyre list yet, but teams like Alpine or McLaren only kept 1 set of mediums, as far as I can see. RB, Mercedes and Ferrari normally should have 2.

Edit: yep, list is up already:

Sticking a car that should not be on pole, on pole, is really quite an accomplishment.
A car is either fast enough for pole or it isn't. No one can make a car go faster than it is physically capable of. George did a great job getting the car to give him the performance it has.

Due to the wet sessions, would most teams not have a set (or two) that are while not unused, just a couple of laps run?
Some teams seem to claim that a short run cures the 'rubber', so could we see some unexpectedly extended sessions?

Thanks for the list
I thinkif Russell keeps the lead and if the field isn't close one of the Ferrari should go for the extra stopper like Hamilton 2019. The other one should go for the undercut and try a pass on track

they still have to return two sets of dry tyres after FP3, no matter if used or not. Most "midfield teams" kept more softs for qualifying.

Could be interesting. I definitely think we will see the soft today and might even get the RB's starting on it to get some early positions and opt for a 2 stopper. Im sure Max has a fresh set of softs too since he didnt really set a good lap in Q3. The 2 laps he did with a broken car were new softs so only really done a cruise round on installation lap with those so still be fresh.

Looks like Russell with start on the mediums and switch to the hards, taking a one stopper with option to swap back to mediums if theres a SC later on in the race. Ferrari need to split the strategy today. But I think we will see a typical Ferrari strategy with copying what Russell does in front (if hes still leading at the 1st pit stop window) I really dont think they are aggressive enough in strategy to get positions through pitstops.

I'd say they should definitely start one car on softs (Sainz probably), no matter what Russell does.

But well, now that strategies are potentially interesting for the first time in a while, I guess it'll rain anyway ;)

Yeah, they absolutely have to split strategies.

I wouldnt even be surprised if RB start Checo on Hards and go long given its a hard track to overtake, but thats a bit far of a strategy thinking about it especially if the rest of pack start on a medium.
