Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

an extra video merc should look at!

someone pointed out that merc don't use flow vis, sensors why?!

and development just some simple changes like bring a few more development pieces
adding some holes near the rear tyres like some other teams
if removing the ddrs helps the balance of the car and improves the setup for the race so that they can add the cascades back on + apparently mercs holiday half a sec upgrades the might move up to be able challenge at the front in the race not falling back.

They're gonna be really screwed when they understand the tyres and realise they benefit from far more downforce than they have time to bring to the table

After Spa and Monza I think they should drop DDRS and add Mclaren style exhaust and cascades

Yeah that would be a good idea, but they sadly wont, maybe next year...

as I understand the coanda exhaust is not an option for them as the engine maps necessary for this exhaust (diameter) are not available to them.
The coanda exhaust is smaller in terms of inside diameter and does sacrifice quite a bit of top end power and in consequence needs a lot different mapping .
The new map ruling will only allow for maps the teams have used in the first 4 races of the year...mercedes obviously had no coanda exhaust on their works cars.

It is obviously nowhere near as simple as that - or teams woudl've figured it out a while back

Thats not correct, the teams can use any new maps they want as long as they stay within the new 2% rule. And why wouldnt Mercedes be able to use the Coanda effect + map when Mclaren can ? Same engine just need to switch bodywork.

that´s how it was published in AMuS online the other week:

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/form ... 14338.html

according to this the standard map deviation has an allowance of only 2% .this std map is ONE of the 4 used in the first 4 races...maybe they tell stories ,of course...but Michael schmidt usually is a more reliable source...

Is it true what that article says about Mercedes, Williams and Lotus now not being able to modify their exhausts as any modification would require new engine maps?

Yes it is, to use the coanda-effect more efficient you need to have a good engine mapping. Those teams wouldn't have a good mapping because they didn't used one since back 4 races.

Remember the second race of the season? Where Michael and Rosberg told on the Team Radio that they didnt had grip after a few laps?
So they decided to pit Nico Rosberg and saw that the tyres were still "fresh".
Basicly; NR and MS where complaining about the lack of grip, the team thought it was caused by overheated tyres and when they did pit they saw the tyres were as good as new.
This explains and proves that the team is focussing on the wrong element.

They need more downforce at the rear so they can place the fw cascades back.
