Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

We were expecting this. The team said after the August break that visual changes would begin in Singapore.

in 1 week how many updates can you do? :D my question is about rear wing ... last year they didn't use DRS at Monza.

BTW: Merc can't win here but with luck they bring 1 car in top 6 (if Michael or Nico are still in race after first corner)

It's not the matter in one week because update was planned moths ago IF there is any

Is it feasible that with the late arrival of Bell, Costa and Willis at the team the W03 was pretty well finalised before they could get their hands on it and when they finally did they thought "ha, that’s bollox!" Ever since that moment they’ve been working on a big update package to make it half decent which would explain why we’ve seen no updates yet but are hearing we should expect visible changes by Singapore?

Thoughts?

If that were true, I'd have thought making a fundamentally-correct W04 would've been a better option than fixing a car for 7 races (7 races from Singapore to Brazil)

It may be possible that the W03 may have just had to tough it out, gathering data on the DDRS, tires, and what not. With the said data, a massive update package could then be developed that would not only improve performance for the last 7 races (a sizeable potential points haul if the packages work, 175 for all top steps) but also have time to make those same packages be useful for the W04.

Just a thought. If one was limited in funds and you KNEW that the W03 was a mixed bag, then saving your eggs for the run of somewhat similar tracks would be a strategic move.

Again, just thoughts.

I agree with this.

If a big upgrade is planned for Singapore then why not have a tilt at the title form then on. Its not impossible for one team to dominate the last 7 races. Its just highly unlikely Mercedes willbe that team, but not impossible

Indeed Raptor. One only needs to look to McLaren to see a team which was starting to look in a pretty dire state, clearly being slower than the Merc at Silverstone, but then pushed a big upgrade which apparently has made them the target car to beat.
So, I have my hopes - but it is hard to forget that McLaren has a history of miraculously fixing bad cars (e.g. mp4-24, mp4-26), whereas Merc do not.

Mercedes updated its front wing endplates in Spa (note footplate vane with "B A N" logo)
