Mclaren MP4-30 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

No big concers about yesterdays lack of running. Its absolutely normal but I hope they make more today. Mclaren said that this car was the beginning of a long path to built a WC winning car but reality says that this was not true. The have already tried to built a WC car. The engine, the package, the chasis, everything is aggresively and ambitiously done in order to achieve something important.

They want to hit the ground running in 2015, go for performance first and then work on the reliability side of things over the course of the season. McLaren haven't been in this kind of shape for a long while, they appear to have find their motivation once more.

Anyway seems Button has been doing installation laps so far, they must be checking the fixes for yesterdays problems. Hopefully those are sorted and Button can get a bit more running than Alonso did.

Mclaren seemed more cautious but Honda stated clearly that they wanted to built a winning car as soon as posible. No politics from the Japanese side. :D

They had problems starting the engine, did 2 instalation laps and have been in garage since 9:40. AMuS reported few fire-ups since then but car didn`t left the garage.

It's a case of fixing issues as they pop up for McLaren at this test. Which is no bad thing as it gives them a chance to develop the working relationship with Honda further before the season starts.

Yesterday Ron Dennis mentioned that the issues they faced on Day 1 were minor and that some of the sensors were not working properly. He went on to say that they could have simply switched off those sensors and continued testing without any problem but they choose not to and instead iron out the issue.

There are only 12 days of testing of which 1 day is already gone in which McLaren put together only 6 laps. Did it not make sense for McLaren to switch off those sensors and do a 10-15 lap run towards end of day 1?

With limited testing, I am sure they need to balance lack of time and hence lack of mileage as well.

After the end of day 1 they came up with a statement that they identified and resolved the issue. If it was not a serious issue then I think they should have ideally run the car in the afternoon and spent time at night resolving the issue. Today again they are loosing time with just 2 laps under the belt.

Look at what Red Bull are doing today. They have a front wing failure yet Kvyat is running without front wings. I am sure they are capturing valuable data about Renault engine and other electronics.

ted kravitz was told that their problems yesterday were miscommunications between sensors. most likely that's what's still going on. i'm sure the hardware is very solid but in order for the hardware to work properly, you need the software and sensors to work properly too. or it's complete a waste to test the car.

everyone could run their cars without sensors, but they'd completely lack data to understand the car.

McLaren still trying to fix "a recurring problem". This test has become more of a shakedown at this stage. Shame they couldn't get these things sorted on a filming day or something.

While I agree with you 100% I also agree with Mclaren's #TestingIsTesting twitter topic :)

As i said before nothing more should be expected realistically from at least the first 2 Days. The PU Hardware looks Solid from what we can see. Work on the glitches / miscommunications... ant we have a way better picture.

Not saying this couldn't have been a better Test with more mileage but so far i'm not really concerned.

Not having much Luck tracking down this problem and solving it....! doesn't look like they will run much more than yesterday at all. Still if they can crack this problem maybe that will let them run a bit more on tues and wed?
