AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly has won the Italian Grand Prix, fending off a charging Carlos Sainz in the final few laps. After the order was reversed in two safety car periods, Gasly held on and underlined an already impressive season with his first win.
I dont believe Lewis benefitted from a tow. If he wanted an advantage, he would have been much closer. I think Merc knew they were well out front , so just said to their drivers, go out first, no tow, 2nd driver drops far enough back.
Bottas insinuated that he did as did Button.
Anyway it shouldn't have been this close in the end, Lewis had bags of pace in hand but had a poor (conservative) S3.

Wolff went on to say that they didn’t push the engine today so they could use more power in the race tomorrow.
Well that's the big question isnt it? If McLaren and Racing Point pushed their engines... Then even tho they have Sainz and Perez in the 2nd row they could end up below P5 in race struggling to finish. With Redbull and Renault Fighting for P3, P4, & P5....

exactly, Both drivers had no tow, it was the fair way to do it, as here a tow would have guarenteed a pole position for one of them, and then they would have ended up in the silly games the others were involved in. If Bottas was to get the tow from Lewis, Lewis would then have to look for a tow elsewhere to have a chance, then they get in all kinds of mess. So with a pace advantage, Toto told them, no tow today, go out early and have equal chance with no risk of getting caught in games at the entry to parabolica.

Tanabe is going to run the PU conservatively and Asaki will evaluate the damage after the race. Knowing Honda, they probably are running the first PU since they won't waste the newer PU on testing the single lap settings. AT might be running the newer PUs seeing that Gasly and Kvyat are now closer to q3 than before. Since all 4 need to run the same settings, Tanabe has to balance the reliability and race pace, it's not like they couldn't use higher modes, it's just that he doesn't yet know what kind of longevity that will leave for the PU until Sakura can evaluate it. It's still too early days for anyone to make definitive conclusion from one qualifying event.
The balance of car and pace will come from running on the medium and hard over the duration of the 2nd stint, and Max looked really good on the mediums.
Kvyat will have an advantageous strategy as well considering he had more pace but was hindered in Q2. There may be a two stop strategy in the cards depending on how long the softs last, safety car, and the track limits on turn 11 probably won't be an issue during the race. Rb16 has been skittish on low fuel weight too.

Maybe he was just too cautious to not leave the track knowing he was up by a lot?
Nearly cost him pole though, he was on for a mid 18.
He lost 0.128 to bottas in S3, and he lost 0.075 from his previous attempt. No drama's, maybe he pushed a little harder in S1 and 2, and didnt quite have the rears at the end of the lap. Bottas went the other way. Turns out Lewis was right.

The likely scenario, easy to see why Bottas would chose to go first then.
