Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Who guarantees that it is a young driver under the helmet? :D

I wouldn't blame the old guy... With all those new goodies slapped on the car i definitely bet that he's itching to get into the cockpit...

I thought these were outlawed.
Guess it helps to keep the flow over the bodywork laminair, aiding the coanda effect.

They weren't banned. There's just a box where no bodywork is allowed, between the airbox and the rear wing. As you can see, the shark fin ends short of the rear wing, whereas they used to connect to the rear wing. The connection isn't allowed anymore. A truncated solution as this is allowed.

It's mostly to help flow to the rear wing, and probably reduce yaw effects

Could they also help keep the downwash even during corners by preventing spill from one side to the other ?

Any way you can throw that pic up somewhere else or let me know where you found it, Ray? I'm only getting a placeholder.

Another interesting thing they did earlier with the DDRS was to block off the left duct opening:
